Tried teflon several times and each time it kinked up or just balled up the shaft,knocking out the complete drive line.

A grease lubed brass stuffing box is likely the best set up for 95% of the people. A teflon liner has its place, and many people will tell you where that place is...... All my race boats have teflon... h34r: h34r: , but I don't do it without a lot of thought and effort..... Just run in brass with lube....

I would say :

for large flex (6,35 mm) : grease

For small flex (3,2 mm) : teflon liner

in the middle 4,75 mm : it depends on how you built it !

If you want to install a oiler(ordered a arrowshark oiler), must you take out the liner.
