Some suggestions on a good sport hydro that will run NAMBA......I would prefer the hull be built, minus hardware and motor..I really dont have the time or knowledge to build from scratch...I found one that looks like it would fit but not sure who built the hull.....I know i dont like the look of spray foam in the boat...

I don't think you will be happy with that boat. I would save your money and look for a RC Marine Designs sport40 if you are looking for a glass boat. You will run in Sport40 class.

I recommend a Sport 40 as an easier to run boat. Sport 20s are a little small for all but perfect conditions and their engines are more difficult than larger ones. Phil Thomas is the king of sport hydros. He makes very good boats that are always available. He has both a Sport 20 and Sport 40 hull. AC Boats also makes a good Sport 40. The best Sport 40 is Mark Anderson's Mutt II, but it is not routinely available. The best Sport 20 is probably Bruce Mooring's boat, and it too has only been built in limited quantities.

If you are looking for a first boat that runs well and is inexpensive, try the Miss Vegas from Tower Hobbies. You can add a larger engine later and run it as a Sport 20.

LOL.....Thats how this all started...We have 2 Vegas's but they wont work under the current NAMBA rules unless modified...Thats why we are looking for a different hull.

modify the Vegas, you have plenty of room. in fact you could probably use the existing strut, shorten the tube, cut a slot in the bottom, flip the strut bracket reinforce the bottom, shorten the drive shaft and you are there.

Just a suggestion but I really think it will work.

JD any thoughts

A stock Miss Vegas set up with the strut under the hull is going to be 15 mph slower than a decent running Sport 20. With an O.S. 18 CV engine upgrade, the speed difference would be around 10 mph.

I would recommend a Sport 40 if you want to get started in Sport Hydro racing. The Sport 20s can be frustrating to get set up as they are on the edge and a little boat. As to which one, an Anderson Mutt II holds just about every record there is in NAMBA and also is competitive in the 7.5 Hydro class as demonstrated by the fact it has won several District 8 Championship series in both classes but also has won not only Sport 40 II at several Nationals but also 7.5 Hydro at a NAMBA Nationals and just won the 7.5 Hydro class at the Crazy Al's Invitational in Montana last weekend. While they are a bit hard to come by it's not to hard if you go through Gary Pruse he usually can get you one in not much time. Whether you get an Anderson, Thomas, AC... you will have to do much more work than would be required to modify your Vegas but as JD points out, while the Miss Vegas is a great entry level RTR even if you modify it you will be spotting the purpose built race boats between 10 and 15 MPH. I think you would be much happier if you want to be competitive to get a Sport 40.
