May I?
A number of weeks ago i took a crack at a set of rules for class called Production Sport Hydro.. (yea its not called RTR)

My goal is to post it on the AquaCraft website as a GUIDE. Or if some want it can be STONE! Its up to the club/s. The reason is really nothing more then to help guide and or "STANDARDISE" a set of rules (nation wide) that deal directly with mass produced sport hydroplanes.

I will post them here first (NO THEY WILL LIKEY NOT CHANGE) and when posted.. COULD be used to avoid confusion.

Having said this.. this if clubs want to allow more or other mods thats cool.. Not my focus however with this...

Here is what they "Might" look like.. Feed back is ALWAYS welcome.

With the ever increasing demand for racing ready to run sport hydroplanes we have put together a simple set of racing rules for your convenience.

Class Intent:

The intent of this class is to race similar Sport Hydroplane Radio Control boats produced for the RC industry. This class is open to all driver skill levels.

Boats allowed in this class must be intended for the RC market. They must be distributed and available to hobby shops as well as e-commerce nation wide.

Production Sport Hydroplane Racing Rules (Nitro Motors):

Basic Requirements:

The boats must be full body hydroplanes (know as “Sport Hydroplanes”)

The engine must not exceed 0.189 displacement

The boats can not resemble outrigger hydroplanes, tunnel hulls and or catamarans.

Boats allowed in this class must be intended for the mass RC market.

The boats must be distributed and available to hobby shops as well as e-commerce nation wide.

Boats must race as purchased from the manufacture; however the following changes are allowed:

You may use any glow plug

You may upgrade to any starting system including changing flywheel

You may use any propeller designed and sized for the drive system.

You may use any production available turn fin and turn fin bracket

You may sharpen and polish hardware

You may use any radio equipment

You may change any silicone part on the boat, i.e. fuel line or pipe coupler etc.

You may paint (and its encouraged) to your liking.

You may scuff the paint

Any fuel i.e.” nitro percentage” may be used.

What you can not do:

You can not modify the engine

Modifying the hull is not allowed including removing detail parts.

You can not modify the tuned exhaust system

You can not add an on board fuel mixture system

Hand made parts are not allowed

Parts can not be swapped from older production version to newer production versions or newer to older.

Performance enhancing repairs are prohibited

If it’s not mentioned here it’s not legal

The race course:

The race course will be setup as an oval. The boats will race in a clockwise pattern. A minimum of 7 buoys, 6 course buoys and one start line buoy will be set in the water with the front set of buoys approximately 50 feet from the driver’s shoreline. The buoys will be arranged with three buoys ,1,2 and 3 on the right side of the course and three buoys on the left 4, 5 and 6. The start buoy typically is placed in the center of the course. The length and width of the race course and the number of laps raced is up to the racing host.

To start the race a count down timer is set to 2 minuets and 30 seconds (2:30). Boats must be running and on the course before the end of 2 minuets (Mill time). You are not allowed to cut the course (cut inside the buoys) at any time before, during or after the race.

At the end of mill time the race begins. The boat closest to the start line without going over is in first place. If a boat jumps the start (is positioned to the left of the start line when mill times ends and the race begins) it is called over by the contest director (CD) and can not be credited for starting the race until after passing the start finish line.
Grim I love all of the rules and ideas. You a re doing an excellent job but I do have one question.......is buoy 1,2,&3 on the left and 4,5,&6 on the right or have i been calling the wrong buoys all these years?

"You can not modify the tuned exhaust system"

I'll be the first to tell ya, I'm using an aftermarket pipe that is IMPBA legal and meets noise requirements and it has gained me nothing. I don't see the big fuss about this.

Just my 2 cents.

What I need to know is if you build it from IMPBA rules is it legeal?

Randy the IMPBA rule book has very little to say regarding our RTR class. If you are going to follow that rule book then you better put in a smaller motor and go back to the original pipe. Here is their exact words:

Single glow engines with a maximum displacement of 0.165 cubic inches may be utilized.

Starting method can be recoil or on board electric. External electric, belt start will not be

allowed. Exhaust system must remain in the stock condition as the boat was received in the

RTR box.

This is the most current information I could find in the rule book. That is why I set up the rules for this class. They haven't been established and we need some guidance for all the new blood that has and will continue to come into the sport. We have added 2 new racers to our club in the past month because of RTR. One of those racers has already jumped head first and bought a Peterson hull and a boat from Zuber. This is all because of RTR. We need to continue to welcome the new boaters with an easy to race "off the shelf" style racing.

The origin of this post was to establish a set of rules that I would like for D-14 to follow. Whether any one else wants to follow them is not my concern. Evansville and our club has seen an influx of new racers from RTR without RTR really even existing. Laying a foundation for new members, established clubs, and local hobby shops to guide boaters is priority one. Then keeping the new boater engaged and not discouraged is priority 1.1. We currently have a brand new member in our club that just purchased the Vegas (not the deuce). It will be disappointing to me for us to lose him as a racer if he is not competitive at our club races and at the local D-14 races. He is exactly the reason I want to keep the racing equally competitive and low cost. Maybe we should go to a claims race format. Just kidding but it would keep us from dumping a bunch of work into the boat knowing at any point it could be bought from us.

READ THE Setember 08 RoosterTail it has RTR info.........With the intro of the Deuce RTR is going to change better worse i dont know. I do know its a better boat. Aqua Craft is in BIZ to sell so change will happen as often as the market softens on a given product

Mikey,

You hit the nail right on the head.

As much as the hobby dealers have to deal with new products (lets not leave out, Computers, I pod, Gaming systems, cars, trucks, Guitars) its always new new new.. and dont think for a minuet that people don’t buy those things to be "better then the next guy".. it does happen. Product progression is not going to stop.. never has and never will.

Same thing in RC boating.. that is why I wrote the rules as is.. no matter what comes out (as long as it fits the basic requirements).. you can buy it and race it on a weekend whim. and or at least.. have SOMETHING to follow if your budds get one too.

Can the rules be used for the rest of us.. sure.. they dont have to but you must admit.. it would be easy..

The only reason I wrote then and posted was to see if what I have MIGHT help us organized racers too!
