Will,

I am restoring an old boat that I may bring to Hobart next year.

It will just have a newer motor in it.

Happy New Year,

Mark Sholund

You know I think you should do what would be the most fun for you. I seems you are not looking for a competitive boat or you would not consider the project. I think we all have differnt aspects of this sport that appeal to us. Some like to build, others like to piant, some are nostalgic with old scales, (some are just old like me), and then we have the go fast crowd. I have a real problem having any boats around that are not in RTR conditon, yet I find I'll spend time on them only to realize they are not competitive so I prefer to run the fastest boats in my fleet. I've decided dedicate myself to the go fast aspect no matter what the cost. Yet I keep wondering are any other excessive, compulsive RC boat hoarders out there. My guess a few are memebers of this website.

Here is a pic of the gator I built in the 80's. Actually, this is number 2. First one was red like the Ackerman one in the instructions with a K&B 6.5 whereas this one had an OS 46 VRM. The sponson connectors of the time were made of maple with spruce shaped to give downdraft at speed. Good hulls in their day....

Nice! Reminds me of my first Gator! Dark blue with yellow pinstriping. Was powered by a Super Tigre X-40 with an OPS 45 pipe. The only piped 45 Gator here in Florida at the time. Most everone was running the K&B 6.5 on a mini pipe. Ran a narrowed 1465 (no cup). FAST!

i've got what i believe is an eagle .21 rigger from the tidewater era with a k&b drum engine in it. may not be an eagle, i have been told it was andy's first design outside of tidewater. also have & run a sundowner ob rigger. on the shelf - a dumas hot shot 4, a nib spitfire 1 kit with hardware, another sundowner, a crapshooter/el diablo ob rigger kit nib & villain s1 kit # 87 nib.

Here is a vintage shot of a 40 and 60 gator (right - Gary Randall) and a hughey 20 hydro (left)...along with some vintage monos (Gary Mueller)...and my old square nose Hot Shot under the table - picture probably from 1981.

I believe there is still a 20 hughey in my dad's shop...

Vintage hydro? Very cool idea.

For all you twin heads, the 2nd picture is a former Gator Twin racer from FLA (I think), but I forget who...??? (From Phil Thomas' gallery)

Cal Lang's twin 40 Gator.

if you were to build a display model, i would keep it original & period correct hardware & electronics. if you wanted to run it, i would upgrade servos & radio equipment, for basic safety & reliability reasons.
