I just put an oiler in one of my boats and am wondering what people are using for lube. Should I run straight castor or is there a mix that is better? I appreciate any input.

Dave,

Try half STP and half bar chain oil mixed.

Castor is good also!!!

It does however react to some radio box seals.

Cheap 90 wt gear oil seems to work well with an initial greasing on my Twin . At the end of the race / day shafts come out with a nice mix of oil and grease , super smooth . Oil every run .
 
I just started using shaft oilers as well. I am using the grim racer cable lube and am very impressed with the decreased driveline resistance compared to grease. I'm sure its just some sort of re-badged lube but works well and is not stinky.
 
I either use the oilers from Steve Wood or make my own depending on the application. And I use straight castor oil in all of them now (switched over to castor last year)
 
How has someone not made a joke about getting your "shaft oiled"?

make any size you want out of brass tubing and some flat stock, and small hose barbs, like for water jackets.

solder tubing to flat stock, shape it.

drill hole for barb or vent/filler hole then solder other end with flat stock, shape.

drill for barb solder barb in ect.

solder a flatstock tab on to mount.

shape hose barb to fit stuffing tube and solder, drill out after. Presto!

Must have a hole drilled in oiler before soldering the second piece of flatstock to close up end of tube or it will build up pressure inside and push out solder,ect.

I use Motor Honey or other oil stabilizer. STP is good. Castor based is probably better for the water life.

Mix of Bar Chain oil and "Motor Honey".

Made plenty of the oilers in many configurations.

Best to be injected on a loose collar that can move with the entire stuffing tube or just solder it directly to the stuffing tube itself. Not a great idea to use the stuffing tube mounts or T bars on mono's for a injection point because if the stuffing tube shifts you loose your passage.

Water cooling the driveline does wonders for longevity. It is a great cure for twin cylinder engine mono's.

Problem with oilers is they are messy. Have gone back to grease on most boats or I grease and then add small amount of lube in the oiler after a couple runs. Since finding better greases even the boats that use to flush the grease from the driveline in a few runs are lasting a lot longer.
