I am waiting for my two SGX 45s to arrive and I have been trying to line up some engines for them. My understanding is that because the sponson tube is so close you have to have and engine with and angled carb off the back plate. I have heard that the two choices are MAC (which have been discontinued and are hard to find) and the AA. I have been trying to get a hold of Al Hobbs about the AAs with no luck.

With all that said I am looking for alternatives/suggestions ?

Dave,

Don't know how long you have been trying to contact Al,, But every time I have tried He has been quick to respond.

Not sure, but he may be at the Northern Nat's in Canada.

But as far as engines with angled up intakes, the A/A 45 and CMB HR45 are built in this manner

Good luck with your endeavor

Rick

Thank you for the quick replies. I will continue to try and get a hold of Al and look at your suggestions.

Thanks again,

D

The metalurgy in the AA 45 is far superior to any CMB or Picco engine. The tolerances in the fit of the AA are also better which means the performance of the AA will last longer than the CMB or Picco. Not only that, when you buy an AA engine you are helping to support one of our own boaters. The AA45 just so happens to be a powerhouse as well with great parts availability and support from Al Hobbs.

Sorry for the delay. My good friend, Justin Hill passed away and I spent last week with his family.

I'm at home this week.

Next week I will be in Hobart trying to see if I can run with the fast boys. I'm really looking forward to seeing some old friends again.

Are you running the angled up carb, or straight in?

Anything done to the inside, or just cleaned up, and left stock?
Rick,

Straight induction. The engine was spotless inside. Al machined the head button so the clearance could be reduced to .010". The carb bell is very close to the rear boom tube but it fits, and the air flow doesn't appear to be effected as the engine runs very strong on 60% and is very easy to tune. Still very tight after a gallon and a half of fuel and running stronger with every tank as the engine continues to loosen up.

Anyone else have any experience with the straight versus the angled in the SGX? Al said that in theory the straight should have more torque but in practice they seem to be about the same. I am worried about the carb being so close the sponson tubes and not being able to breath properly (especially at our altittude).

David,

My straight induction AA is in an SG. The boom tubes are spaced farther apart on an SGX, and the rear tube appears to be closer to the engine mount on the SGX. The engines in both are set at an angle. The carb inlet on my AA sits above the Boom tube but the bottom of bell is very close to tube. Go with the angled inlet version of the AA and you should be good to go.

Larry

That would certainly be my preference if I can get them.

Thank you,

D
I have run both in my SGX--The straight induction needs a little work. I can show you in my SGX this weekend if you are at the race, The race was moved to LAKE TRACY from Longmont.
