Lovely :D We'll be able to relax with a little oval racing in the Hooter's Cup on Sunday night.
Sunday Night?

when was that deceided? last i spoke with Glenn it was Friday or Saturday Night at Hooters...

Ron

just got off the phone and Glenn asked me to post that the Hooter's Cup will be held on Saturday Night...

some folks might plan on leaving for home early on Sunday afternoon or evening and Glenn doesn't want them to miss the FUN!

Ron

..was it because of the RC Hydros Controller?
Actually it was because I had exceeded the limits of that controller more than once in other SAW racing....and then ran into the weeds with the throttle wide open for to long. It didn't take much time to start the fire.
That was an older rc-hydros ESC, one of the very few (of about 8 units Andy made) which will even run on 4 cells. The biggest problem is the back EMF on the run-down....cooks the FETs and they eventually give it up.

Hi Guys,

I've got one of the 4 cell units but it's water cooled and looks just like all the newer units. Never saw the ones with the stand up FETs.

Paul.

Ever think the bemf has anything to do with spinning the 05 at 50K rpm on that gear drive, Jay?
I've toasted 3 of the 4 cell units myself, but not as spectacularly as that, just melted solder and exploded FETs and Schottky's. Still have a water cooled and an air cooled unit or two. Gave Wilmer one of the old air cooled esc's last year, maybe one of you guys can talk him out of it this weekend...... assuming that he hasn't built a rigger to try out some of his new O'Donnell 05 motors.... :p

Alan,

OK, it's over and it was pretty exciting. I sank one sport hydro, but it magically surfaced later. I had one explode and catch fire, and one ran away and crashed into the tree roots at the end of the lake. Brian B made the only permanent sacrifice to the "pond gods".

Jim V

Jim,

You own waaaaay too many hulls as it is. For good charma this year sacrifice one or 2 to tht pond gods.

Nice flame job Jay....brushed too!

Nobody has to worry about that R/W/B shovel anymore. It now permanently resides at the bottom of blue lake. I'm sure there's a country song in there someplace

I guess I need to build another one. At least it went 80 on 12 cells before it died. As badly as I abused that boat, it's amazing that it lived this long.

Brian

Not only was Brian's Dark Horse shovel very fast, and very tough (none of us could believe it survived so many spectacular crashes at speeds over 70 mph without a scratch) but he wins the award for the most deck-up landings! He was well over 50% in his ability to drive back to shore after each crash.....how's he do dat?

Ray and Brian had me pre-stock thier cabin with breakfast foods and beverages and "Lucky Charms" wasn't on the list!

 Ron

Brian et al,

I truely didn't want you to make such a sacrifice....2 hulls in the same event....my you really are bigger than life!

Glad you guys had a good time.

Jim,

We need details of your wrecks..what cells blew what speedo let loose....any evidence from the forensics?

Ya know it's not nice to tease the pond gods...they take on such a vengence!

Oh and Brian...no country music(hurts my ears). Maybe just a hiphop "Brain B and his shovel crew" naw can't stand that stuff either.

Alan,

I didn't have any trouble with Barracuda controllers at all during the Valdosta SAWs. I ran 10 boats in17 classes, all the way from 4-cell Sport Hydro up to T-Hydro. I did have a Hacker 77 explode and burn very convincingly in my 31" Dark Horse mono. That happened after the run was over, and the boat had stopped on its own. I also had my Q-Sport entry run away due to a loss of receiver battery and my failure to program the fail-safe feature. The only other calamity in my fleet was when the little 4-cell Forrester sport hydro decided to submerge and head for the bottom of Blue Lake during the turn-around. It amazingly popped back to the surface about 3 minutes after it disappeared. It was full of water and had mud on its nose. After replacing all of the electronics.........she worked just fine and set the record at 36.7mph. I really pushed a variety of 4 to 32 cell packs of GP3700, IB3800, and IB4200 cells during the event, and didn't suffer a single failure. I can only fault the driver for not making the boats go faster, all of the equipment I used was EXCELLENT!

i had no Barracuda 125 failures in my boats, six to eighteen cells at the FE-2 SAWS...

i ran GP3700's and IB3800's in packs of [six to thirty two cells] and lost [one lone cell] during the three day event...

i crashed my Q-Mono "Miss Tupperware" [my fault] on a back pass trying to bump her standing record of 66.391 mph set at Speed Week III in December resulting in minor damage, a new flex shaft, prop and some CA had her back on the water next day...

i had a great time with little carnage... but i run soft set-ups compared to some folks...

B) Ron

BTW... our IB3800's out performed our GP3700's across the board at FE-II what was your experience?

Ron

I couldn't tell much difference. I was running some new packs and some old ones from last year. None of the cells came back very hot. My Q-Hydro rigger, which set the fastest time ever for an electric boat in the IMPBA at 86 MPH was running a very old pack of GP3300s that I bought from Fuller's Fast Electrics. I hadn't run them for over a year, and assumed they'd be flat. I'll make a new pack for next year.

Thanks for the batt info guys.

No castles up in flames huh? Now that does surprise me.

Alan,

i didn't say no Fish were fried at FE-II, just that i didn't fry any of mine  our pit did have that sickening sweet aroma off and on thru-out the course of the weekend so someone was cook'n something...

as for batteries, we [Chris and i] took double sets, IB3800's and GP3700's for our six, eight, eighteen, and thirtytwo cell set-ups and tried them all, at the end of the day, our four combined records were set using the IB3800's...

i'm not sure what if anything that means, draw your own conclusions...

Ron

I ran two Barracuda 125s and they never faultered, even after one got dunked pretty well. No cell issues at all, but I was running GP2200s, GP3300s and GP3700s. I did see one Hacker 77 (old style) go up and one or two Barracuda 125s.

OTOH Steve Mason ran his Barracuda 80 all weekend in his P Mono and it lasted until his final pass at over 62 mph; it dropped a wire off the board. But Steve was pushing it far harder than it should have been pushed. Imagine 62 mph on 12 cells and a Nemesis motor in a mono! Ray needed a Neu motor and a Schulze ESC to barely edge Steve out of the record. It was a classic battle......

that's a fact, Ray threw everything including the kitchen sink into that battle and squeeked out on top by a hair...

Stephen's scratch built Tortuga monos are not only beautiful, they rip!
