Yeah the rudder I'm using is the TLR MV rudder. It started to fall apart after about 4-5 runs. It's loose and wobbles. It's crap. I'm working on production of a new better designed rudder for the MV. I'll post pics when I have them available. Now I'm in the design/testing stages. I think I can make it available for a lot less expensive than the competition. Just need to work the bugs out. But now since my MV is in shambles right now production will be set back another two weeks or so. Once I get everything ready I'd like to do a before and after video with the TLR verse the Xcel parts.

Here's Chris Guppy's Vegas hooking out in a tight corner. The boat kept running.

Here's a pic of the aftermath of a violent spin out with my MV. I was bringing her into the pick up area and had to cut hard right to miss a kayak that drifted into my path. At about 50+ the boat spun out then flipped in the air and smashed into the kayak. I was having spin out problems all day. At high speed I can give it full rudder and it takes the full width of the course to turn and if I hit a wake it violently breaks loose. It's been like that ever since I started using my s*** stick from TLR. I'm still waiting for my machinist to deliver my new X-Blades. I guess I just gave him a week or two more while I make repairs.

thats a hard hit what nitro are you useing and did you ever get to make some

It was a hard smack. the boat was flying through the air like a frisbie. I was running 50%. I'm still working on getting all the inbgredients for the fuel. I have a buddy who runs nascars and he's gonna help me put something together. I'll let you know when I have something.

I know folks running the turn fin you are using...and they are not having any problems...I think your problem is in the aftermarket rudder assembly you are using. There is too much flex in it.

What I did, was design a rudder blade that fits into the stock MV mount. In short, it is just a blade that uses the OEM mount (nothing wrong with the stock mount). It showed GPS verified speed increases of 3-5 MPH on a stock MV using a box stock rudder. I have not done GPS testing on a modified boat yet.

The problem I am having...is finding a machinist I can count on...

Left rudder is the new one I designed mounted in the stock MV mount. Middle is the OEM one, right is my rudder out of its mount.

I agree with you there. I think the rudder is too shallow. I's only 2.5" from the bottom of the transom. Then there's the center tub which is another 3/8" down, that only leaves 2.125". Then when the boat is running top wide open the transom is lifted even more. The rudder is a faulty design. As far as the turn fin, I made a prototype turn fin from some scrap 0.06" aluminum. When I ran that fin the spin outs stopped and I was pulling tighter turns. Once I get my turn fin and rudder completed I'll run them both and post before and after results. I'm looking to get that "On Rails" handling like I get from my Sport 40 and GX1 Sport Hydro. And I bet with the two combined that's just what I'll get.

Here's a picture of my design for the rudder. It's almost 1" deeper to get more bite into the water.

I am trying the speedmaster rudder, just a slight Mod and it fits in the existing mount. I will be cutting some length off when I get a chance to tune.

I have rune the boat once on some very smooth water and not very fast but it seemed to work very well.

I use speedmaster on all of my racers. THe only thing I don't like about using the factory bracket is I hate that darn plastic control arm. Well that and no breakaway in case I hit something which has happened once.

????????????????

Starting to sound like you've been listening to someone's sales pitches. Been running three vegas boats and have never broke a rudder control arm. This includes two of them running wide open into the shore. I am sure someone out there has...but I would not consider it a weak link...and even if you do, you can probably have control arms made out of aluminum real cheap if it really worries you. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater...

Breakaway is fixed by just replacing the bottom screw with a plastic or brass one. Personally, I am not real big on the plastic ones, because they can break hitting a bouy...which should not take a boat out of a race.

Sean,

I'm not worried about the arm breaking, I just hate the way it looks. There's all this nicely machined/some polished metal and then there's this big ugly white control arm with the hinge pin sticking out. If you use the speedmaster rudder on the factory bracket you don't have the option to use any shear pins.

i watched one break by bouncing off a bouy lol, guess if ya dont hit anything it'll be ok!!!!

Man, this place is hydro heaven.

I'll need to take more as I just added a cvr.18mx

That looks great. Hope the after effect of running your "Agent Orange" isn't the same as what many Vietnam vets have encountered. Good photo of an alternative fuel tank. How big is that tank, 8 oz.?

funny you should mention the vetrans as I named it in honor of my uncle. He told me when I went out to visit him that they got him anyway it just took longer, he passed on easter. He lived in your neck of the woods in Parkland, Wa. anyway the tank is a 12oz sullivan

Nice ride!! I'm running the same hardware and I've been having serious problems with spin outs and no turning response. I am running a .21 not an 18 but I don't think that should make this drastic of a difference. At full throttle I can barley hold lane 8 in the turns. Then I hit a small wake and it just goes flying.
