Ok guys I had my new roadrunner .45 hydro out this past Sunday. I will say I am impressed to say the least, but it has a few issues. It seemed to want to skip across the water and unload hard in the turns, then tossed a flexshaft.

I got rid of the aeromarine collet and replaced same with a octura collet, I will now also run a retainer between the end of the stuff tube and the collet, no more expensive losses for me. I think this ride has much potential as it was just the first 2 runs on the new used boat. Now I just need to learn to drive it. I will keep all posted as to changes and it's progress

I just want to say thank you to everyone for all the help and input on this boat so far, Larry jr., Paul "gooy" B, John Kubitz, Cliff Zeek and my son Tony

Thanks again to all,

Roy

I prefer the Aeromarine collet, i have not lost a shaft since i started using them

Ditto, I throw Octura collets in the trash. If you lost a shaft from an Aeromarine collet I'd suspect it was either too loose or too short. I've had many Roadrunners over the years and with your description of how it runs it sounds like something is possibly amiss in your set up. Do you have the Roadrunner set up sheet? If not I'd be glad to scan and send you a copy tonight when I get home, p/m me your e-mail address if you want a copy. What is the motor/pipe/prop combination you are using?

Is the boat setup.. ???? I would suggest setting the boat up properly then set the turnfin copy and paste the link below.

I am running a .45 CMB gold head in her right now. As for the collet, who knows, the shaft was seated all the way in, and I had the collet crancked down hatd, maybe I will try it again if you guys run them.

When I fit up a new shaft for the first time I take the one side of the collet completely off so that only the piece on the motor remains. Next I slide the flex cable all the way up until it bottoms out in the collet base, then measure the distance from the already installed drive dog to the strut deducting 1/4" for 3/16" cables and 5/16" for 1/4" cables. This gives me enough gap for any cable wind up and the shaft bushing. With it done this way you place maximum amount of cable in the collet and when you hit your gap at the strut you know it's all the way in. After cutting the cable I use the belt sander to round off and slightly taper just the very end of the cable so it passes smoothly through the collet parts. Everyone has their own way but this has worked for me for a long time. Also don't beat on the end of the shaft if it does not go in the collet, take the collet off and check why it's hanging up. :)

i prefer octura collets myself. aeromarine collets are too soft for me and i think octura runs truer. never lost a shaft to octura or aeromarine. just like octura better

Ditto Steve's comment. I recently got an Aeromarine item for a Picco 45 and the run-out on it was aweful. The wobble was that bad it would have broken something. Octura collet on same engine runs true.

Maybe my son will have her out at Cricket creek this upcoming Sunday, lets see what happens this time.
