Rear sponsons, rear trucks or rear ski.

What design works best on twenty to sixty size riggers ?

Pro's and con's of each style would really be nice.

I see them all on boats and they all seem to work well, so I was wondering what some of the differences were?

Better handling, faster down the straight, faster around the corner?

Any comment or opinion is welcome

Thanks in advance T.C.

Terry, I have both Rear trucks & a Ski. I originally just had the trucks, but didn't get the performance that I wanted, so I added the ski right down the middle. Better launching, Bigger(Way bigger) Prop selection, more Rpm's and handeling.. Corners, well let's just say the cornering is phenominal. I could take the Trucks off - since I have the Ski, but I won't get the corning I want. The trucks barely weigh anything - so I'll just leave them on. Just make sure that if you use both - that the Ski is at least 1/16" to 1/8" below the trucks - so as not to run the rear of the hull(Wet).

Thanks Ted,

Thats just the kind of information I'm looking for.

Do you think sponsons would slow ya to much?

I definately would with my Hull. That would mean that I would have two trucks - one Ski, and sponsons on the side.. Over-kill if you know what I mean.. It really depends on your hull. With different hull applications, the type used largely depends on the design. For example: a Ninja hull that uses sponsons(Swept back) is going to be the best design for that type of hull. JAE's on the other hand(The way they are designed)have proven that the Ski technique is best suited for that hull. Doesn't mean that the ski can't work on different applications though. If you look at my Hull(Cross between a Kepps & a JAE) Trucks were my perfered method of Sponsons. This proved to not work very well since the Kepp's had Sponsons and that's not what I wanted. I still like the Trucks(For cosmetics) but need something else - so I added the JAE Ski. Since the Trucks don't weigh hardly anything - but aide me in the Corners - I kept them on.. I could cut them off for weight reduction, but were probably talking about 3-4 ounces. The Ski is definatley the best way to go in my opinion. It keeps the Prop set at a certain level on the water and you can push the big props - without worrying about how it's going to launch. Good luck!!

Thanks again Ted:

It would look different with both trucks and rear sponsons. LOL

Are you running the trucks the same AOA as the front sponsons ?

I think they are referring to the under the tub rear sponsons like the Eagle SG, SGX, Mongoose and original Jaguar use.

Full size Unlimited hydro guys refer to them as "shoes"

To tell you the truth Terry, I can't remember exactly what the rear AOA was. My front sponsons were: 3.4Degrees and I added .2 degrees because I didn't like the attitude it was running. The rear trucks - whatever they are - are the same Degree as the JAE Style ski, but slightly under-set from the Ski. When I made the JAE style ski, whatever the measurements that they have for the JAE.21 - is what the AOA is on the Trucks. It just came out that way - perfectly. I was more interested in the AOA of the JAE ski, because this is the only part that will be touching the water(Wet). The Trucks do nothing, but aide me in the corners and look o.k. for aesthetics purposes.. Wait!!! they really don't even do that.. I should cut them off.

Thanks again Ted:

I called them truck for lack of a better term and I also seen a post where someone called them that.

"shoes" actually sound better.

I would be curious to see if your boat cornered as well without the "shoes" ?
