You may want to try this guy also.....

I second Glen Dye. However, it's been around 20 years since he did some liners for me.

I'd be very careful sending stuff to that individual, I had a hard time getting parts back from him years ago when he had them over a year.

Had to send a registered letter threatening to sick a collection agency on him...

Just a few questions........How will thy hone the tapper back in the liner and where will you get a piston with the right fit to put in it?
Also how $$$$$$
All this to bring a dead old eng back to life?
Think it would be better to just spend the $$ and get a new up to date eng with parts available to rebuild.
Just a thought.....................

I could see rechroming and refitting the piston to an engine that's still run like the K&B red head outboards. I'm sorry to hear that about Glen. I spent a long time talking to him at a control line speed event. He was very knowledgeable, but that was a long time ago.

Good thinking David!

The re-chroming of any type of brass cylinder is a straightforward process. The existing hard industrial chrome plate can be easily removed in a 50% solution of warm HcL acid. However, removing the chrome plate from any type of aluminum cylinder can only be done by grinding the chrome off. All cylinders have the designed taper amount machined in the cylinder before any chroming or honing takes place. Pistons are easily fitted by machining various size pistons in .0001" steps. Accurate measurement of the taper amount & the roundness of the cylinder must be done "BEFORE" any piston fitting is done.

Very few "engine builders" & machine shops have the necessary knowledge plus the equipment to accomplish what needs to be done!

Dave, I'd like to get one of those Sunnen small cylinder hones with corkbond like Stu has.

When I sent a Picco 80 and 90 to Millennium, we sent new pistons along with sleeves.

They were familiar with taper, did it right, and left a nice oil retaining crosshatch.

It seems to me I paid in the neighborhood of $85 for the two. That was back in latter

80's. Worked great, ready to go, no break in required. I think they were better than

OEM when they were done.

When honing hard industrial chrome for a high silicon alloy aluminum piston, never use a "oil retaining crosshatch" pattern. It does nothing except increase the piston's wear. The correct taper in the cylinder & on the top edge of the piston will provide more than enough lubrication, even at RPM's well beyond 30,000.

Hi Kris
If your piston and sleeves are getting soft there is a place call OS rocket racing that will resize your sleeve and it is done on a CNC machine and the sleeve are round when you get them back.

If you need new oversized pistons you can get them from here, Piston for Novarossi 3.5CC КЕЕР, MITO, MEFISTO

They are 0.015mm oversized and made by Anatoly Karpov, the quality is better than the originals

As for chrome plating, I'm afraid I cannot make any suggestions. If the chrome is in good condition you may be able to just clean and reuse the cylinder with a new machined to fit piston using one of the oversized pistons from Anatoly Karpov. Of course, you would need to accurately ensure the taper and ovality are correct within the liner as well

Beware though, correctly engineering the piston to liner fit is no simple task, it takes skill and specialist tools but is not impossible
