Prop ID Information

Is there a tutorial somewhere that explains what how the prop numbering/ID system works? I see all the numbers, some 4 digit, some 3 digit, but I have no Idea what most mean, unless the specs, (dia & pitch) are included.
IE: how do I decode those numbers????
