I had a chance to tear down a new 2009 picco 45 that belonged to Buddy lowe @ charleston. The new Picco 45 Must have the 303 .100th longer flywheel cone.(aftermarket item) it appears to be a excellent engine & with a little break in will last many many years. I have not seen a rod problem if manintain properly. jw
Joe,

So you didn't find anything different about the 2009 blue head and the latest black head engine? Were the transfer ports the same? Did the piston have a dome? Was the combustion chamber not sloped to accomodate the piston? Didn't the intake drum have more volume? I have both engines here and can't figure out how they carry the same part numbers. Oh, and the rod looks totally different. I'm not an engine guru but can definately see a huge difference between the two engines. Not to mention the case castings are nowhere near the same. Good thing they both say Picco or I'd be confused. I can only hope they perform even close.

Ron, I seen the same new 45 parts in 2004 in a new production run of parts. the new billet pistons. Head buttons rods were built many years ago for replacement parts for the older 2001 45 engines. Frank orlic modified our Billet 45 & 67 pistons/sleeves 4-5 years ago. I`am still running the same billet pistons. Many boaters have never seen these parts I`am speaking of.???? They were in very very limited supply. We had to exchange our monies to sterling $$ to make the purchase. Picco had the parts all along Just took time to get the cases & the crank to assemble the engine. If I thought there was a better 45 engine?? I would have it. The Black head picco 45 has won more races @ national events than all of the others combined & they are still racing today. & we can buy replacement parts too. Best lit 45 running & turns A lot of Prop & Cup. I`am sure you already know this. The machine work on the 2009 picco 45 looks excellent. p.s. this engine will require 10-12 tanks rich @ a medium to low piston speed to break it in. This is a Good thing........ you are establishing you piston to liner fit. she will last forever with a little care.jw

Yes all of the things you speak of are the newier parts with diff angles. But I believe after you run your 45 engine you will be back telling how GREAT IT IS. it wants 10-12 tanks @ low to medium piston speeds (RICH), They have that Picco fit built into the piston liner. same as the novarossi P/L fit we all know. It will last forever if handled properly on break in. & they MEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW just like the PICCOs we LOVE!! I call it the PICCO FEELING!!!!!!!!!!!!! FEEL THE POWER.... PICCO.
