Automotive paint is GREAT! I have used it on all of my boats and it stays on with no problems. I used all 2 stage paints. Meaning that there is the paint (base coat) and the clear. Be sure to use a clear that utilizes a hardner and the primer should also (it is known as "2K") give the primer time to cure and shrink back into all the wood grain (a week should be good) then sand it. if your buddy has a shop he will know the steps. but since it is wood allow for extra cure time otherwise all the wood grain will show when it dries and cures. you can also use this clear over stickers to protect them but once they are down and the clear is sprayed that is it, you cant change your mind those stickers are now there to stay so be 100% sure.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you make out with it ;D

PPG Automotive products work very well. They will wthstand high nitro. The only problem is they are not cheap and you will need some equipment to spray, but since you probably already sunk around a grand into your boat anyway, you might as well splurge.

Good Luck :)

If you want to show off your wood working, I would at least leave the bottom of the hull natural. Use west systems epoxy and a teflon putty knife, and coat the bottom surface with it. When it cures, sand it down with 600 grit. Repeat this process about 2-3 times. When the grain ridges are buried, go over the surface with west systems and a paper towel kind of like polishing a shoe. By the way, this proceedure is know as the MikeP technique. Then last go over it with a super light compound. It will look like glass. If you can get them in the states. Get some rattle cans of Tamiya fuel paints. Tons of nice colors. Cheap, too. Do your scheme on the upper surfaces. After it totally cures. 3-7 days. Go over the top with a 2K clear. Wanna see some pics when your done ;) Good Luck!

Hmmmm PPG, i work right next to where they make that stuff, kind of bad with the fact that if they dropped a litre of the stuff they have there, or if they had a fire, there would be nothin left within 8 k/m of it :-

I hear guys talking about automotive paint all the time and was wondering if the stuff if spray cans would work. I'm talking about the touch up spray paint sold in auto parts stores. They come in a good sized can for the money and there are a ton of colors! I just need to know if they are nitro proof. Thanks! Dale

The stuff in the touch up cans alone will not work. It will get all gooey and end up being a big mess. Most of it is acrylic based laquer. If you are going to use it, it would be wise to go over it with a 2 part epoxy based, or poly urethane based clear coat. Acrylic urethane is just as bad as plain Acrylic in my opinion.

Hey Don!!!! Chance to sell on your rustoleum ;)

I only use PPG Deltron. My advice is no matter what you use, only use that brand. Paint chemicals tend to react badly against one another and there is nothing worse than going through the trouble of doing a great paint job and only to watch as the last color or the clear coat starts to bubble or orange peel.

Also a good primer is as important as good paint. I've seen guys going flying down the straight aways only to watch their paint tearing off! And I mean all of it. Now that's really embarrasing, that's caused by cheap primer that either never dries or reacts to the paint.

If I can find the code, PPG makes a good water sealer primer that is top notch. I'll look for it and post it.

It would be tough to start buying Deltron as it is not being made any more. I use the PPG Concept. This paint is gloss and you don't have to clear it. One less thing to do. If you don't want to spend a lot of money into the colors, you can always shoot krylon and then go over it with PPG clear. Jerry Dunlap swears by it, but he is obsolete, so it doesn't really matter. LOL

does anyone know where to buy PPG or Dupont paints on the internet? I've been searching with no luck...thanks ;D

What is PPG Concept, is it in a spray can form, and where can I get the stuff? I don't have the cash to invest in a air brush this year so what ever I use needs to be in a spray can. I would just buy the paint from the hobby store but they don't seam to make enough colors in thoes brands. If I can't find what I'm looking for in nitro proof paint, I thought about buying a can of black nitro proof paint from the hobbie store to paint the engine bay, and then use something like Krylon with a clear coat for the rest of the boat. But I would rather paint everything with the same type of paint so please give me your suggestions everyone! :D One thing to know is I only need it to be nitro proof for 20 percent. I don't race my boats, I just run them for fun. ;)

Here in the low country of S.C. you can get it from PARKS auto parts, but it's like 18.95 + a spray can !!!!

Most all of the quality automotive paint specialty stores have the capability of mixing any color you can think of but you better be ready to pay $$$$

Yes you can get clear coat also !!!!! But you only have a certian can life !!!!!!

URETHANE !!!! NO ACRYLIC !!! URETHANE !!
