i have been using a badger 400 gun for about 25 years to paint boats, i want to buy a new sata mini jet 4 before i paint my next boat. i once tried a cheaper hvlp paint gun with a too small tip and gave up on it and sold it. i understand the sata guns are much, much, better. what i would like to know is what tip should i buy 1.0,1.2, or 1.4, or will i need all three to spray primer ,color, and clear. i only use klasskote epoxy products. can any one help?

thanks

Hey Steve I got a Sata MJ4 early last year & it rocks!! Keep you Badger for primers & shoot paints & clears with the Sata. I went with the 1.0 tip & it works just fine. B)

Don,

Could not find any specs on the Sata MJ4. Where did you get yours?

Thanks.

Steve I also have a Sata MiniJet 4sr, what a excellent gun.

This gun is the best for painting small items such as boats.

Just finished a 21 mono using House of kolor acrylic with a 2 pak clear.

Used marbilizer for the first time with a cherry base and yellow top.

great effect for somthing different.

Looked at a de vilbiss hvlp gun but decided on the Sata with 1mm tip.

Very happy with the ease off use.

Well, I broke down and picked up an MJ4 with 1.0 tip on Ebay. I have a good De Vilbiss gun but it is really too big for boats. Plus I won't have to keep adjusting fan patterns. I'll continue to use my ole Paasche VL's for fine line work.

Good recommendations and as usual, a great site for info.

Steve,

I painted my Blackbird .21 last year using a borrowed Sata minijet 3 with a 1.0mm tip (I think), Klasscoat paint of course. I'm no pro, but sprayed like a dream both color and clearcoats. I remember reading on the Sata USA website recently something about the efficiency of the minijet 4 such that a 1.0 tip behaves like a 1.2, etc.

When you get one, I get to borrow it right? LOL

The Sata minijet 4 the best mini gun going I much prefer the 1.2 for clears but you could probably get by with the 1.0 but both would be even better the 1.0 for paint and the 1.2 for clear or at least the type clears I spray...good luck

i always thought primer was the heaviest, then color then clear the thinest. what am i missing here

the endura primer a have used in the past won't run out of the can if you turn the can upside down, and go get a drink

there area lot of variables when you talk about paint...a primer surfacer is very heavy it is intended to be sprayed and sanded to fill imperfections(1.4)....a primer sealer is normally very thin like paint(1.0)....a low solids clear is thin(1.0) a high solids clear is thick it is intended for hi-build to bury graphics and paint lines and it is normally wet sanded after being sprayed then buffed.(1.2)

Good info that just educated me. Thanks Rusty!
Anytime buddy! I will throw another one in there you can't judge the thickness of paint when it is in the can it needs thinned first some call for 2:1 ratio some 4:1 or with a catylist it can be 2:1:1 or a 4:1:1 and there are other ratios as well. u keep that in mind when figuring your cost of paint...how much does a quart make of sprayable paint? at 2:1:1 you get a half gallon etc.
