I bought a used aeromarine sprintcat the 40/60 last week. And it came with an OPS.67 that had only had five tanks of fuel through it. The motor looked good and is clean inside. Despite some scuffs on the head and lack of the water-cooled header shown on aeromarines website. It has a 3rd channel remote mixing valve. This is new for me. I was wondering if there are any general settings to go by with setting this thing to run. Is there a LSN & HSN on this thing? I played around with it for a while today while trying to go boating. And I got it to run and fairly responsive with the throttle input. Plenty of smoke. But this thing wasn’t moving too fast on the water. I’d say low 30” if that. The guy I got it from said it should run 50-55mph with how it is setup. It has a sharpened and balanced Octura X460 on it. Can anyone throw some experience at me and give me a heads up on what to try or look for. And what’s to be expected with this hull, motor & prop combo for speed.

What percentage nitro, 460 good prop, can you post a pic of motor. I run this combo. Ray

The key to this combo ispipe length and nitro. The engne loves at least 45% and 50% is eaven better but the type of pipe and pipe length are critical. Answer the question re nitro % and type of pipe and length and maybe be can guide you to better results. We own the same boat but took out the 67 and put in an OPS 45 with an OS Max 7B Carb w/3rd channel and the boat is an animal that runs on rails & eaven corners on rails at full speed. You will find that the 67 - when properly setup has too much torque for the boat and it will be too loose and almost uncontrollable.

Here is what it looked like in the boat before a few hours ago I took everything out of the hull to check thing over since I bought it used. I am running 30% nitro wildcat heli mix is about the closest my hobby shop carries I can use. Its 18% oil mix synthetic blend. When I got the boat the carb needle was tuned completely closed so I wasn’t sure of where a base starting point would be either.

From the pic the motor doesn’t look new to me but I opened it up and the piston and all looks clean and was advertised as only having 5 tanks of fuel through it.

Your setup looks good. That's a Bob Violet 3rd channel needle. I would go to 50% nitro ( Red Max boat fuel 900 rm blend 20% oil). Phone # 803 222 7488 to order at FHS supply. I would change O rings in remote needle. Post in For sale forum, WTB o rings BVM 3rd channel needle. Pipe lenght should start at 11" center of engine to start of flat belly on pipe. When you reassemble boat run start belt under pipe, less chance of jamming linkage putting it over top of motor. Check fuel system for leaks, grease prop shaft good and have fun. ;) ;) Keep us posted, how you make out. Ray

Walt Barney here on IW has o-rings for the BVM needles. Just got a few sets from him.

The engine you've got is a disk rotor. That's what I had in mine until the road broke, which also broke the bottom of the piston and bent the liner. I priced the replacement parts, but at about the same time, happened across a new OS .81 VRM for about the same price as the replacement parts, so I went to the OS. Anyway, it's important to be sure the disk clearance is correct. From what I've read, if the clearance gets too big, the disk can shatter. I don't remember the exact number, if you do a search here, you should be able to find a few threads talking about it. Since it's used, it would also be good to check the bearings, if you haven't already done so.

The .67 OPS was actually a great engine for this boat. More than enough power and capable of plenty of speed. If mine hadn't blown up I would have stayed with it. The OS .81 is actually a bit too much for the boat. It's faster, but getting the setup correct, so it doesn't blow over, has been challenging. Driving it is also tougher,. I have to be way more careful with the throttle, especially when the water gets rougher.

I haven't actually run mine since last season. The cowl got torn up from blow overs while I was getting the trim right and learning where I could and couldn't push it. I decided to replace the cowl, there's only so much that duct tape one can use on a single boat, but other projects got in the way. I finally got a new cowl and I should have it running for next season. It'll be fun to bring it North and see how it compares to Ray's. ;)

Is the Octura x460 the best prop for speed I can use on this setup? Or is there something better? It is sharpened and balanced of course.

Oh and the pipe right now is about 11" from the center of the crankcase to the fat part of the pipe or where the seam is. Should I go shorter like 10 3/4"?

I think that's the prop I used, but am not sure. I'll have to go take a look at my prop drawer. Obviously I have a larger one with the OS .81. There may be faster props, but you'll have to experiment to know what's best for your specific setup. As far as the pipe goes, you could try gradually shortening it, but keep in mind that the engine will become more finicky as you do. Get it running reliably with the prop and pipe setup you've got before you start experimenting. And then when you do start changing things, do one at a time, and keep a record of what works so you can go back to it when the performance goes bad.

JP, The 460 prop I found is the best for heat racing. You mention 11" on pipe to seam. If your running the OPS 60 pipe it's no good for that application, not enough vol. Change to a MAC 60 nitro pipe. Ray

Thanks, I'm not sure of the pipe it came with the boat and I wasn’t told what one it was. I'll upload a picture maybe someone can identify it if it s the stock OPS pipe?

The first thing I thought was too short a pipe. Ray is right, that pipe is great on a 40 but no good on a 60. Get a Macs 60 pipe at the same length and you should be fine.

JP,

I can trade you a MAC 60 pipe for your OPS 67 pipe if you would like?

Anyone else have any OPS 67 Nitro pipes hanging around I would like to

buy a few more or trade propellers for them.

Let Me Know Please,

Mark Sholund
