Ok, this question is for the woody guys out there. I going to be painting a wood sponsons for a rigger and would like to know if I need to seal the sponson first before painting? Can I just spray this with the primer and then sand and spray the colors?

I also heard that you can get colors mixed from a car paint store and have this put in an aerosol can. Is this true and would this be the best way to paint for the first time?

Thanks,

Richard

Richard The first thing to do is seal the wood with west systems epoxy than when dry use a razor blade to scrap the epoxy smooth. than primer and paint.

I have had really good luck heating the wood with a hair dryer (Not too hot) to open up the pores then brush on a thick coat of West Systems. I then let it soak in for 15 to 20 min before I wide off the epoxy. I prefer to wipe off with a rag, but an old credit card or razor blade works well. Once it’s cured I sand smooth using 220-grit. Then repeat the process except I use 320-grit on the second and third coat. I put a third coat on the sponsons bottoms because I don’t like to pant them. I feel the edges stay much sharper this way.

As for painting the tops, I spray a light coat of catalyzed primer then I use PPG Delton 2000 with PPG 2042 speed clear. It’s a bit expensive, but I spend way too time and money on my boats to even chance the finish coming off or blistering due to the High Nitro we run.

Good luck,

Will

Richard I just got some new clear paint made by MONTANA call Big Sky...It the best clear I've ever used...I cleared my new Scale and spilled 60% nitro on it by accident, and it wiped up nice and clean with no markes on the clear...I normaly use CromaClear, but I don't think I'll be useing it again.....

Richard,

use Polyeurothane resin, I think that's the right one. I'll check which I just finished using for a customers Jaguar. I reduced it with 50% acetone. Scrapped it off, sanded it and reaaplied it. He only sent me a little of it so I don't have any left. He had me paint only the top and then clear about 4 coats on it, sand it and reclear it. Came out very light weight.

Also, Rick Cesati is prepping his and sending me his boat to only clear over the West Coast epoxy.

If you go to Custom Colors they can do the aerosol cans for you, but the clear I don't think they can because the hardner would harden in an hour. You can buy the three parts of clear for about $110 and get a cheapy $14 air gun and paint it since the sponsons are so small, shouldn't be that much trouble for you.
