My father's 1st model boat was a 40 Northwind. Looked like a flying wing! Does anybody still make these as a kit?

I actually had a 40 and I still have a 20 version of this boat... I traded the larger one for the 20 kit... which I still haven't assembled...

I'd love to have something like this in a 22"-ish version for a little SAW project I'd like to try... :)

Get it built my friend they are a sweet running hull.
I was going to build it, but for what I want to do with it, it's too heavy. There is also some damage to the right rear corner...

So, I'm going to use it as a plug to make myself a mold so I can hopefully make myself on in bagged carbon... Was thinking of I might have to do something similar for the deck, and maybe outfit it with a Hydroplane style cowling or ??

We'll see where it goes...... It was just a whim I got this weekend while I was cleaning up some stuff in the garage... I'm not very good at just having unfinished projects laying around, though I have MANY! :)

These hulls are very nicely laid up and also are very sharp and crisp... I'd love to see one running!

NOTE: I know I'm "splashing" this, but they haven't been around for YEARS (decades??), and it's for my own personal use. I have no idea who might have the molds, and am pretty certain that they wouldn't allow me to use them or lay me up a boat like I'd want if they did. I do think it will be cool to somewhat "preserve" a piece of RC Racing history... I hope this isn't considered bad form. ?? If so, I appologize in advance...

IF, the molds were available and we could have these made again... I'd gladly pay for one to be produced as I'd like it to be (bagged carbon)... it would be a heck of a lot cheaper than trying to do it myself! I'd take a 40 sized as well... :)

I wouldn't worry too much about "splashing" the hull. It was well before my time when the boat was popular and that's over 20 years ago. It was fast in a straight line but didn't turn well. The engine from that hull was a very old 7.5 that probably has less power than a P spec electric setup. I think it would be a great SAW experiment.

Is this still considered a legal NAMBA Mono?? I don't think the rules have been changed in that department in many, many years.

Nevermind... I reviewed the rules again... Looks perfectly legal to me... still... :)

I had 2 Northwind 40's in about 1973. I don't remember if I ran K&B or Supertiger in the 40 boat, but I ran a OPS 60 in one and it was scary fast for they time. They really a fast boat but really prone to blow overs if the wind came up. On flat smooth water, nothing could touch them. I don't think anyone had a mono that had gone 50 MPH yet. It took a REALLY fast hydro to go 50 MPH then.

Would make a cool ModVp with a few changes ;)

The Northwind mono's were incredibly fast, literally a prop-driven "kite". I can remember, maybe 1973 or 1974, seeing a number of these boats run at Legg Lake and San Diego Model Yacht Pond. They were very fast down the straights, but would "push" or "drift" in the turns.

Many 20 hull's were powered by Veco 19 (side exhaust), SuperTigre .19 (side exhaust), even Enya .19 (side exhaust), and later 1rst-generation K&B .21 (3.5cc) Marine, SupreTigre .21 Marine. OPS engines were used as well. I can remember in particular a 20 hull built by Jean Adams (painted black) powered by a modified SupreTigre X-15, one of the fastest boats- period - that I had witnessed at the time.

Many 40 hull's were powered by K&B .40 (side-exhaust), SupreTigre .40 (side exhaust). Later SupreTigre X-40, OPS .60, etc.,...

Would love to have a 40 hull. But would take a 20 hull, especially in carbon fibre. Actually a 40 hull powered by a current 3.5cc engine would be a rocket-ship. If I remember correctly the 40 hull was maybe 34in or 35in?
