Here are some pics David of the Sirocco , length is 25'' (probably good for a modern 12 engine these days) , all plywood, no fiberglass , I'm thinking a 30-32'' version would be good with a modern 21 engine and hardware, this boat was built about 35 years ago
wow, that's beautiful! Never realized Pilot (of Japan) produced this hull (most likely around the same time other delta-type hulls were prominent). Yes a 31" to 33" version would be perfect for a modern .21 engine. Thanks

thanks David, and yes to build a 31-33'' version with a 21 engine is my goal, all timber, no glass

I just pulled mine down to take a picture of where my strut is set at. It seems pretty perfect where its at with the trim tabs up like this too. It seems like its flying but not blowing over.

I was all ready to paint this one and decided to run it to see if I liked it and to put a tape on lid on radio box first . I am definately going to paint it this winter now that it works so well. It is one of my favorite boats now as far as just being able to yank it in turns wide open and just have fun with it and it not act up . I Still think one of these with a outboard would be awesome too if the transom could get the motor high enough up to make it work. Another gentlemen on here said they work great with one . Someday maybe one will get posted so we can see how they set the motor on it.

Just a update on my little northwind.
I was able to redo the stuffing tube in my northwind and moved the motor lower to get a better angle. I also upgraded the tube to 1/4 and did a 3/16 shaft to hopefully help with the vibration I was having last time running when I had the strut pushed up and had such a bend in the stuffing tube.

I have my northwind 40 ready for the water . I am excited to see what happens with it.
I am going to try a x450 prop with a 10 inch pipe length to start .Hopefully this picco can pull it.
Also my son 3d printed me a bezel for the radio box too which was nice to just glue it in and done.

50% fuel ? maybe pull the pipe out another 1/2 inch and see what she'll do... Throw it in rich,, and sneak up on the needle one or two clicks at a time... remember, longer pipe=more torque, less RPM. Shorter pipe = less torque, more RPM..

Quiet pipes can be tricky....watch the smoke..
if the smoke goes away, but it's still pulling, it's probably too lean... if the shine on the glow plug wire looks anodized and not shiney..it's too lean.. if it's pulling the coil out towards the exhaust port a little bit and still looks shiney, you are good to go.
Then shorten up the pipe a little bit at a time, and see if she'll fly!!!

Thanks Frank for the tips. I am only running 30% . I will make it 10.5 inches to start. I started it today and the engine sounded good. I have this pipe on it now which I don't know who makes it . It has a baffle in it and you can see a screw when you look in the stinger on the back . I also have a old mac 45 pipe and a new ops unmuffled 45 pipe to try on it. I will have to see what works best. I should have went out today just too many irons in the fire .

It looks like a Picco muffled pipe to me. I have a Picco .67 muffled pipe and it looks there same. Only bigger

I have the same Picco P45 in a Prather Aggressor. With the prop at 1/2” below the vee, the P45 has no problem swinging a X548. I am going to try a X450/3 on my next trip to the pond. It will be interesting to see if the P45 can turn the X450/3

What do you have your pipe length at from the flange edge to the high point. I was searching and some were at 10 inches on the 45 engines and wasted said 10.5 Since you have the same setup it would be nice to see what you have yours at as well. Let me know if you get a chance to measure it .

I use a MAC pipe with a flat band. I am conservative on pipe length. I started at 10.75" from the plug to the middle of the flat band. I whittled it down to 10.25" turning a X458. The P-45 is asking for more.

From the picture, you have the strut deeper than my set up (1/2"). I guess it would put more load on the engine. You may want to start longer than 10.5 and see how it goes.

I'd like to see some running shots and videos of your Northwind

I have it now 10.5 from edge of the flange so about 11 to the glow plug.
I will get some video and post it once I can get a clear day to take it out again. I appreciate you giving me the measurements .

that thing should fly! You'll probably need to do some (minor) tweaking on the strut angle after initial runs, to adjust ride attitude (keep from flying off the water)

amazing how small these hulls looks with an engine installed (Picco P45). And to think the "Northwind 40" was designed for a .40 to .65 power-plant. The 40 size hull should measure approx. 32.5" length
