I'm building this hull right now. fun stuff,.. $65 just the wood, straight from the laser guy if you want one. (cowl not included)

That looks very nice, I am into building my own boats right now....... I like trying different things. I would be intrested in knowing some measurements of your boat ..... just to see how much different your boat is from mine. I have based the ride surfaces off the jae but most the rest of the boat is a little different. The key here I would say is this boat is still a scratch built boat and I Built it...... That was another main idea for the JAE boat was people building again.

Back on the subject I really think the lines of your boat are really nice :)

Not real sure i Like the boom positions thru the tub...... but I hate them in my tub also...... lol my rear boom is behind my engine next to the radio box wall. It does make for a weird boat at launch, if your use to launching holding the rear boom tube and the rear side of the boat..... the balance for that is way off ( ya need to hold my boat and think hmmmmmmmm how will i launch this thing ....lol)

This one still has quite a few JAE inspirations too! On the tubes,.. I was thinking that as long as I don't mount my turn fin to the sponson directly, all the material not touching water, or mounting to the tub, is added weight and drag. Hence the small sponsons. The location of the tube moved up in front of the fuel tank because there was not any sponson there anymore. Then I added the TF support rods. Kind of old school I guess. (to keep the fin from twisting).

Still going to have the overhangs on the edges and no dyhedral (spelling?) on the sponsons.

Shoud be SLICK!

anthony,

the drawing looks very good, i think it will work great..just be sure the leg for the turnfin is very stiff..

I'm using an extruded 1.25 inch aluminum "u" channel, .125 thick, with legs cut down to .25 inch. Light, stiff,.. and polishable!!!! I'll make shine!

you will want to beef up the area where the tubes that get glued into the sponsons are..

my new boat the sponson tube inserts that i glue into the sponson are maple and i am making the tubes that get glued into the sponsons out of 7075

I had problems with this in my last boat. I ended up putting a pin in the turn fin sponson. IT's a challenge adding the hardwood insert and and still keeping the tubes perpendicular with the sponson side.. at least for me it is. With no angle on the outside of the sponson I am able to put it flat on a drill press table, put the tube that is going into the sponson in the drill press chuck and put it in with epoxy. I use 30 min epoxy for this. I have actually put it together and turned the press on, spun the carbon rod in the drill bit while in the sponson,.. it spreads and warms the epoxy,.. got it to flash off in about 6 mins,.. this is with a divynacel care,.. hopefully it holds tight.

I usually build my boats real light,, cause light boats are supposed to be faster,. and becasue they are usually prototype,.. use sheaper woods a nd stuff because I don't know if it will work. Kind of disposable without a ton of loss if they didn't work well. On this one I used aircraft grade ply and didn't take as much material away to try and have a stiffer hull. I have the tub built and it looks real nice. I used the 1/4 triangle in some of the corners I thought needed it... man, this boat is VERY stiff and totally straight, but it's ALOT HEAVIER than the previous boats. I'm putting 304 stainless steel tubes for the boom tube holders. I got the material yesterday, and man,.. it's heavy too.. For the first time ever I think I'm worried about weight.. The boat is built much stronger but I didn't think it would be this much heavier.. I'm probably looking at a 4 lb boat when done...

Should I abort now? The boat is dead straight and rock solid... I built it to last, and not flex at all...

What do you guys think?

Anthony, is the new boat a .21? I used to always want to build my boats sturdier - which meant heavier and always ended-up kicking myself and saying, why did I spend so much time on this hull to make it bullet proof, and slower - when I could have made it lighter & more disposable after someone plowed into it. Building it heavier is still not going to protect it from a 50-60mph hit - if dead in the water. Nope, my boats are all in the direction of disposable - now.

Actually Anthony, I wouldn't abort.. your getting towards the heavy side, but after thinking about it - depending on the set-up, I remember that Dicky Dahlheimer's boat(In my club) is actually heavier than mine and it goes faster :) Don't give up on it - just yet..

A 4lb JAE 21 boat won Hobart this yr.

4 lbs. isn't too heavy. i know some folks have really worked at reducing weight lately. i'm still not sold on an ultralight HEAT RACING boat. i feel that 3 3/4 to 4 lbs. is a good weight, not too heavy not to be fast, but still heavy enough to run & turn well in race conditions. if your boat gets bounced around enough for the turn fin not to hook up well, you can't run the "good" lanes consistently. i've seen a lot of slower boats win heats, because they ran the bouys & the faster boats couldn't pass staying outside of them.......

Ok then,.. I'll keep at it.. I do see my current one stating to bounce around a bit at speed..

Thanks guys,..

On a quick note,.. I really appreciate the help I get from you guys and this forum..

no more than we appreciate what you're doing with trying different designs. we all benefit ;) :) !!

I made more progress on this boat last night. I think it's going very well. The boat is heavy compared to my other builds but it WAY more solid. I think it's an interesting design.

Anyone have advice on how to add the "shingles" to the sponson bottoms?

I do remember that Gleen Quarles had a nice little Thread on the Shingle -thing.. You might want to ask him.. I got my idea from his shingle steps, but went a different route - that seem to help my boat out alot :)

Do you have any pics of what you did?

I didn't go the Shingle route because my Hydro didn't have problems getting up on the Sponsons(Due to the AOA). It gave me an idea, because the problem I was having was due to the Sponsons being too skinny(Width wise) for the size of the Hull. Ithey would drag in the water as a result. I'm only talking about 3/16" here on both sides, so I added plates on the ride surface made of Formica(The kind used on Kitchen Counter tops).. It worked great - No problems.. No I don't have pics of this, but I can get some..

Anthony my riggers use shingles in the front sponsons and the rear ones also and they work really good
