Just returned to boat racing after years of raising my family and need your suggestions on which radio would be a great fit for outrigger nitro racing. My son has a spektrum DX4R for nitro buggy racing and he is real happy with it.

I would appreciate all of your help with this.

Thank you

Doug

I also returned to the hobby after many years and I bought a Futaba 4PLS 2.4GHz T-FHSS. It is a very nice radio. Telemetry sensors are a little pricey

I bought the same radio as James, the 4PLS. It's a nice little radio that can use dry cells, nicads or life packs, depends on what you set it up to use. While it's not a FASST system, it will do pretty much every thing the new 4PX will(other than use FASST receivers or give audio telemetry) and does so at less than half the price

Futaba FASST 2.4 rocks! I am super happy with my 4PK.

Futaba is the best option for stick or wheel.

Speed is nothing with out control and you'll get the best control with a Futaba 2.4 FASST radio.
I wouldn't go that far since the FHSS systems are just as accurate and fast responding as the FASST systems. I don't know why everyone discredits the FHSS systems. As I said in my post, the 4PLS does everything the 4PX will except use FASST receivers and costs less than half. This is kind of like what they said about the fourth generation Camaro, It didn't quite match the Corvette's top end performance but it was every bit as quick and, for the financially savy, it was better than the Corvette

Nope, not discrediting the FHSS system at all, I just prefer the FASST system. Both are great!

It's just a personal preference like the Vette vs Camaro (I'll take the C7 everytime

I'm just curious - what do guys use the 4th channel for? A movable wing? Or trim tabs on a mono hull? Or does the 4 channel transmitter just have more features that you want?

Thanks.

On the 4PLS, it's set up as follows:

Channel 1) Rudder

Channel 2) Throttle

Channel 3) Assignable-can be set to a knob or switch. Knob would be good for remote needle

Channel 4) Assignable-can be set to a knob or switch. Switch would be good for up/flat canard(adjustable using end stop settings), engine kill, strobe light on/off

If used for car/buggy, 3 and 4 would be used to adjust braking, steering and acceleration systems

Do not go with a spektrum radio. At our race a few weeks ago three guys lost there radio signal and crashed there boats on shore. All three were using spektrum radios. I have been using the fly sky radio for 2 years now with no problems. They are a good cheap radio.
