Ray,
At 1080p and 600Hz refresh rate, there is no better picture than plasma, BUT........ If you've got a bright room (picture window, etc) go with an LED/LCD. We've got a 50" plasma in the basement and it is awesome. In the upstairs main living room, we have a 36" CRT, and when it gives out, we'll be replacing it with an LED due to the front window making a such a bright room.
Both LCD and LED use the same technology to create the picture image, but different backlighting. the LCD uses flourescent bulbs and LED uses, well, LED's, which can be be individually controlled, allowing for better light/dark control, making a better picture than LCD in alot of cases.
As for brands, Panasonic is still the top rated plasma and Samsung rules the LCD/LED market. I would seriously suggest going to your local BestBuy and checking them out in person before you buy. Find one that fits your budget and buy the next size bigger, trust me. This way you won't go through the "I shoulda got the bigger one" blues.
Thanks. Brad.
