Hey Don!

I kinda zipped thru this thread, but a question caught my eye about how much you think a 90 hydro (all up less fuel - my edit) should weigh and I didn't catch an answer. I am in the process of building my 7th. twin (2 Picco 45's) and would like to come in about the same weight. Thanks. Rich

Hey Rich!

I'd say for a true race ready 90 hydro between 6 1/2 & 7 pounds (less fuel). Again, I don't get too hung up on weight, a few ounces here or there ain't squat, especially as the hull size gets bigger. I'm more concerned with how the drives & handles. I know there are people who insist on building these "flyweight" boats but they're usually the ones floating in the lake when the retreive boat going out at the end of the heat. :p

Thanks Don. Mostly just curious and your numbers sound about right. I am aiming for under 9 lb. I am a bit goofy about linked engines driving one prop. I suppose because my initial tutors were John Bridge, Gene Kilisnick and Mike Meelbush. They pretty much thought at the time that twin engine, twin screw boats "Prostituted" F class. I joined the "elite" with a twin-21 using two K&B's linked back to back (not my first effort). Once I get this thing together I'll post some pix. I think you'll like it. Quite a few have already seen the engine "pod" as I finished it last year.

Rich

That sounds cool! Post some pics for sure! B)

Hmmmm, guess my twin SGX makes me a F class prostitute!! :p

If that were so then you could say "It's been a business doing pleasure with you"!!! :D Actually the days of geared twins were pretty much over by 1975. I understand there are a few still around in Europe. I'm doing this one (second generation) with a cog belt. Also I miscounted. It's #8. Not bad for an old fart who hasn't run twins since 1991. I guess I kinda got the "prostitution" syndrome all over again when the big engines invaded F-Class. I would really like to see "multi-engine" reinstated as I think it would rekindle interest in twins. I know quite a few guys who have twins, but don't race them much unless the host club has a twin only offering. Guess that's why I have been developing this boat since 1996. I want a reliable "bomb" that'l be right in there with the singles and I don't particularly like the big engines. I quit racing E-hydro about 8 years ago. So all I mess with are 21's and 45's and multiples there-of.

Rich

Leighton,

YOU DON"T... sorry about that, but the well has REALLY dried up since Picco is spending all their energy on producing the car engine(s). Us Picco lovers are hurting. I was able to get a few parts from a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy somewhere in Europe (BIG secret) last year, but that is dead too. I had an opportunity to by 6 engines in 2003 and only took 2. It was right after that the bottom fell out and i could kick myself for not doing a little purse snaching on the side and buying the other 4. Wish I could help you.

Rich

Charles, e-mail me directly. I've done a couple of those. Just ask Bob Morton how the one he had in my old 45 Roadrunner was......... :p

Don,

6.5 to 7 pounds! I'd hate to see what you would get to if you got 'hung up' with light weight! :p I was pretty happy with my new 90 rigger at a bit over 9 lbs, but obviously I have some work to do! :p

How on earth do you get them that light?

Nitrocrazed racing: Stacking on the pounds....

OOOPSS!! Silly me I meant to say 8 to 9 pounds (sorry Rich!!). Geez what was I thinking, I weighed the 84 SAW boat yesterday. Actually I really never weigh my stuff when it's going together. I went over & pulled my SGX 84 off the wall & weighed it in a 8 pounds 3 ounces. I just build it, dial it in & race it! :p

Don,

I suspect there are some who could get a 90 hydro under 7lb, I just fugured you were one of them. From what I've seen at record trials I'm sure it's doable, but certainly not durable! :)

Rich

Ahhh, grasshopper... durable is big part of equation!

NOTE- must be read while thinking of old t.v. series "Kung Fu"

for what is is worth, i had a old eagle sg 21 that was 5 lbs, that's right 5 lbs and it run 77 mph.. just wish nova rossi made the short stroke motor again lol!!
