Using a drill press and a cross slide , dremmel bits and small router bits some simple milling operations are easy.

Hi Guy's

The answer would be any good machine tool supply house. I thought I was the only one who had worked this 'cheap mill' out. :D

there's a reason mills cost so much. they can do much more than this "low tech" setup can. i wouldn't even think about machining anything tougher than aluminium. tolerances are dismal, but this setup can get rough fabrication to the file and sanding stage pretty quick.

The drill press method has it draw backs. The quill is not design to take the side load that comes from milling. You will probably notice a lot of chatter in your cuts. Lots of little cuts need to be made to elivate this. Small end mills and small cuts. Probably not good for the drill press in the long run.

I tooo have done this with a drill press.

I got some milling bits, smaller ones, they work good.

I got a burr bit, and dont like the alumn stuff, cloggs up.

next question guys, HI SPEED OR LOW SPEED On drill press?

let me know, thanks all

NT

different bits require different speeds to be effective with minimal chatter (the noise will let you know when the machine is "not happy")

Probably not good for the drill press in the long run.Mike
The company rep at Spishak (the industrial division of Amway,I think)said its ok to mill with this model ,as it is virtually indestructable,or easily replaced.

I have the same set up from Harbor Freight !!! I run into clearance problems and have to move the clamping base plate and use the lower mounting plate to attach the cross slide vice. I also got the 8"drill press from there too!!

So far I have used it to cut the K&B head squish band down [after taking to much of the sleeve] and cut the fingers in the w/c head like the SS and open up that black carb .

Bye the way how the hell are you ??? Long time no see !!!!!! :p :ph34r: You have those tunnels ready to rock ??

Vic, That is one sweet peice of work there! thats easily the nicest mount ive ever seen!

Butch, been doing good man, I sold most of the boat stuff on ebay a few weeks ago, been racing nitro R/C cars every weekend, just needed a change of scenery. I still have a few boats, ill probably put together one for this upcoming year and run a few races, but im having ALOT of fun racing cars rights now, theres atleast 8 tracks in S.C. and someone is running somewhere every weekend, unlike boats where we are lucky to have one race a month two states away..... have you been running lately??
