Low motivation,.. how do you get yourself back in boat mode?

Its all about commitment and knowing when you are going to burn out.. After years of doing this I have gotten much better at not shutting down. Truth is I don’t remember the last "down time" I have had. I do remember back in the 90s taking a few weeks off..

It has been a greater challenge now however with my Epoxy allergy. I can no longer "just" glue that sheeting or whatever.

Inspiration to me comes from the Preusse’s. Gary and his family have been doing this for over 40 years NON STOP.. Dunny too!

Even though I have” to do this and its my living its still just as fun as ever!

For me boats are like instant gratification!!

I've spent 20+ years building giant RC warbirds from scratch and detailing them down to the cigar in the pilot's mouth with the correct length of ash! Spending 6 months to a year, 6 to 8 hours a day in the shop every day to make a certain contest deadline......................

then Grim drug me to Mendota one year and watched the scale boats run....................I had to have one of those!!!

You two take this hobby thing to a whole new level! Your both kinda sick in your own little way (I ment that as a compliment)! Ha Ha

Who thinks about the cigar and the length of the ash?... WOW! Mike, well, Mike knows how to "model" anything... His scale helicopters are real nice. Who figures a way to have a trooper scale out of his heli on a rope (string)? his boats run OK too. As do Greg's...

My brother flies at Top Gun with Greg- but he flies Pro-Am not Pro. The amount of detail and time that goes into a scratch built 1/4 Scale Rc Warbird is UNREAL I'm humbled every time I leave my brothers house- I always say to Georganna when we leave- Our stuff is childs play in comparison -_-

Just being with the guys a race keeps me going. All the excitement at a race, going out for dinner and a few cold ones.

Seeing what's new ,getting new build ideas. Above all just being at a race. There is no limit in this hobbie.

I am rebuilding motors right now,asking my racing friends for advice. And boy can you get a ton of ideas.

Usually talking with fellow racers gets me walking into the shop/ thinking about boats in the off season.

The thing that's really made a big difference for me though is hanging a white board in my shop. I take some time and make a detailed list of what I want to do to each boat/ engine/ project I have going. I put everything on there even the "nice to haves" so to speak that I don't necessarily need to do.

I realized that when I was having trouble getting motivated, I was usually focused on doing things that I didn't want to do at the time. Now I have a list to go by and pick something I WANT to do first and that usually gets me rolling on the rest.

Sometimes all it takes is sharpening up a rudder or changing out some old screws...Then the next thing you know your slinging epoxy and its 2am

U tube dose help. Reading and seeing whats new on IW also works. I'm curantly building 3 JAE 90-101's, 3 KEPS 21's and 2 JAE 21's plus finishing off a scale. When you cut 1 a couple more don't take that much more time. I build for my son and myself and??

After the storm been rebuilding houses, no time for boats. But when I do get in that Low Mov, like a light switch goes on and can't shut it off. Wife ask where you been for the last 2 weeks, response in the shop. Been doing this a long time, it's all good as long you keep playing with Toy Boats B) ....==={}

My motivation usually comes from my wife. If she gets on my case for one reason or another, I go to the garage and tinker. Things have been pretty smooth this winter so not much is getting done.

For me, it's hard to either get motivated or actually work on boats with the work schedule I've been on for the past 5 months. Working 2nd shift or the overnight kills all motivation to really do anything :blink:

I know the feeling, in the winter I'm not motivated at all. Like someone said ill get a bit to do something like build or finish a project. For me it took missing a race and just watching it to get me going I pulled out the boat (RTR) and hit the races.

Yes. That's exactly right. Just sign up for the same race as Joe Warren and Julian Conde. Their smack talk alone will have you so fired up you will be building boats not only for yourself, but for half your buddies as well, just to make sure SOMEBODY kicks their AZZ!!!!.......

This winter I Built 2-whiplash sport 40,scale,two blackjck hydro,finishing sport 20 hydro and going to build a new wood tunnel.Thats staying busys.Wood is good.

Retireing and moving from UT to Nor-Cal pretty much ruined my motivation. Everything is more expensive and less money to spend. Nitro is almost dead in Nor-Cal.

I have been racing and running boats since 1978 and never had a done and out period of time. After the last race in the season which recently is Charleston I am ready for a break till about Thanksgiving and the desire to start building hits hard. New sport 40 about to debut. an F- boat and twin are coming out of the jigs in about 2 wks in Mark Bullard's shop and painting and assembly will be going non stop till Atlanta with testing in between. This is all between 12 hr work days. I think those folks who are hard core modelers don"t get "down". I guess we are always are wanting to try something new to go faster and or get better. Always chasing the RABBIT. I NEVER want to CATCH the RABBIT.
