Ok, went out yesterday to run several boats with Mary. We had to stop running three of them due to screws coming loose. In a previous thread, saw Bob K state that he uses Marvel Mystery Oil instead of loc-tite. Figured since I had some right there, I'd give it a shot. Don't know if it has to be virgin oil or is used is ok. Still, two motors and one motor mount screws came loose. When assembly time comes around, I use a torque screw driver to get all screws the same, then another 1/4 turn just to make sure.

Figured I'd redo the motors with good ole blue loc-tite.. However, today, I was search'n another subject in previous posting and came across an old chat that removed some cobwebs from the gray matter...

Screwed up

Even though I read and re-read that thread, I just can't fathom how anti-sieze works as a locking compound. I trust those that put their .02 cents in, but can someone explain how this really works, if ya know that is..

Mark I scanned thru the thred quick and general jest I got out of it was more of a keep from popping off screw heads when you disassemble procedure, rather than a loc tite one. Lotsa neat ideas,

Gene :D

Gener,

That is why I reread the entire post again. Take a look at page 3, posted by the motor man himself, Rod Geraghty:

"Before I re-assemble a motor I treat the headbolts with Corrosion-X and put a very very "small" amount of anti-seize on the new headbolts. Not only do the headbolts torque up better but the next time the motor comes apart the headbolt will almost literally fall out of the the motor with ease.

I treat every headbolt I install with Corrosion-X and anti-seize."

His words "re-assemble" & "install" are what I picked up on..

Are the head bolts the only bolt that gets this treatment? What about the case bolts?

Antiseize- neverseize will keep the screws from rusting to the other surface, or seizing up to it if its alumn.

I would suggest when using antiseize to try and use a lockwasher if possable.

I have had a few "problem" screws and bolts come out all the time. I have blue/red locktited them and no problems, a quick fix is CA glue.

Just touch with sodering gun to heat bolt head and that will soften the glue or locktite.

I would say YES to the head bolts are the only ones to get it. As you have water going through the head, leakage, and splash. Hell you got the antiseize mess on your hands, do them ALL.

Note, antiseize WILL CONDUCT ELECTRICITY. SO i have been told :p

John Equi explained how Marvel Mystrey oil works as locktite. You first have to clean all thread clean of oil and residue, then soak them with laquere thinner and let dry then put a small drop of Marvel mystrey oil on bolts you want locked the oil portion will evaporate and leave a varnish that locks the threads and when you do need to get the bolts loose you will hear a snap of the varnish breaking and very little residue left to clean off. Works great.

Tom, it is quite possible that anti-sieze will conduct electricity. What we use at work is copper or nickle based. No real vibration where we use it, mostly high heat, around 600+ degrees and high pressure, 1,600 PSI.

bzubee, thanks for the explination to the MMO process. Guess virgin oil would be best then.

Mark.

I have done a fair amount of motors from offshore locations I.E. The Virgin Islands,Bermuda,Hawaii,P.R etc, etc. All these motors are run regularly in salt water and getting some of them apart has be a real challenge. That is what precipitated me to start treating all the screws on motors I receive.

To answer OB nuts question;I treat all screws with Corrosion "X" but only use the anti-seize on the head bolts.

I also use a torque wrench on everything except the drawbar used to hold the carb in.

Rod, thanks for jumping in and letting me know.. I'd guess that Corrosion "X" does the same as MMO, evaporates and leaves some type of residue.

What kind of torque specs do you use? Just wondering out loud..

Mark..

OB Nut Racing is all screwed up!

Mark

I torque all my bolts then put a dab of 5 minute epoxy on the heads. Never had one come lose. When you need to take it apart the epoxy breaks lose real easy. Do not use on the head boats just torque the boats to 16 inch pounds in three steps. KEN
