Hi guys, I got my JR synthesized reciever wet a few times and now it dosn't work. I tried spraying it with corrosion X but it diden't help. It is definatly dead.

So what would you suggest I buy? Another JR synthesized reciever? Or the one made by Novak? Any ideas on which one would hold up better to water?

Thanks for the help!

You're not the first one that I've heard of with problems with these recievers. They seem to be more sensitive to water than regular RX's. If you get another one, spray it first before putting it in a boat then do whatever else you can think of to help keep water out, paper towels, balloons, etc.

I spray mine VERY OFTEN.

I have one that acts up, will work and then not work next time turned on.

I would stick with the JR.

I have 4 of them and only one acts up from time to time, and i just use a blow drier on it and the problem goes away.

if your looking at the real small/light novak id say no ...... one I had had a limited range and would been very bad in a boat.

I would have to agree with Tom on this one. I think the vibration alone will kill any novak receiver. Keep in mind, novak's target market is cars and trucks.

And remember always, this is just my honest opinion. : :)

WOW! I figured you guys would say to go with the Novak synthesized reciever. You realy don't think they are built better? Well I'm glad I asked. I guess I will order a JR reciever tomorrow. I've been putting it off for a week now, I hate to spend $75.00 on a little black box!

Now what do you think JR will do if I send the old one in for warranty work? Any one try their three year warranty? I saw a post awhile back on this same problem and the guy was told by JR that he was at fault for breaking the reciever, but rumor has it that is was sent in with water still inside!

Thanks for the help! Dale

Novak bad?? Really, I've used them - AM and FM style, for some time now. Never noticed a problem. They are wrapped in foam to kill any vibration's that would be transmitted to them. What I use are the non-synthesized rx's..

Boy, I don't know where this bad novak thing is coming from. My experience with the small fms is perfect. I spray them maybe 2 times a year, put them in a small pouch made from wet suit foam, and they have never failed me. I use corrosion X to spray them NOT the crystal though. Zero complaints and they are so small it is pretty nice as they fit anywhere.

Hi

I doubt there are any really bad receivers on the market anymore - people just won't buy them and don't hesitate to let other people know.

Why buy a synthesised receiver? howmany good FM receivers and a few crystals can you buy for the same money. How often would you really use the any freq option. If you've got to open the radion box to change freq why not change crystal - no harder.

Just my $0.02

My experience with Novak Receivers was the same as Tom, fine for cars though.

"Why buy a synthesised receiver? how many good FM receivers and a few crystals can you buy for the same money."

It's actually less!

$74.99 for a synthesized reciever, and

$54.99 for a standard reciever + $24.95 for a crystal set.

For almost the same price you can have any channel you want. Yeah it would be nice if you diden't have to open up the radio box to change the channel, maby some day they will make one.

Out boat club has 15 to 20 members and each have more than two boats. It is hard to find a channel that no one elce has. It is nice being able to change to what ever channel I want after I arrive.

Hi Boatlover

The price similarity surprises me but hey you live and learn. I guess the price is OK provided it works longer than your last one.

Best of luck with it.

That's the only problem, to me they seem to be pretty sensitive to water. But I couldn't tell you for sure, I havent had much experience with other types. My old remotes were Futaba AM ones and they took alot of abuse. This is the first FM set up I ever owned. Thats why I was trying to see if Novaks synthesized reciever would be a better choice for a replacement.

I look at it this way.

JR, Futaba, Hitec, and Airtronics (maybe even KO) all make radios and radio equipment for airplanes, helicopters, boats, and cars/trucks. Planes, copters, and boats have a lot of vibration, let alone the $$$$ can increase quickly in any of these models. One would assume that these companies’s have tested for the applications listed above. Therefore I personally lean towards these companies for radio equipment for boats.

Don't get me wrong. I race cars too, and Bob Novak makes EXCELLENT products. However, I don't think his product is created for high vibration boating environment.

Hi Guy's

I think it's funny the way everyone assumes boats are the worst vibrators in RC models. RC cars would have to be way up there not the least because everythings bolted down to the rigid chassis. Off road cars probably provide the most extreme shock loads to any RC gear. RC helis don't have a huge vibration problem - or they won't fly - but they do have high mechanical loads on the components. Not neccessarily an issue for the receivers. I would have expected any modern SMT receiver to not have any real problems in a boat, other than taking a bath. Interference from bad engineering or poor maintenance practices is more likely the big issue.

As they say you pay your money and take your chances.
