Finally got a fuel tank built and the boat running great, and then the shaft breaks right at the s bend in the radio box and destroys my electronics.......

Anyone else had problems with shaft breaking at bend?

my Jae 45 G is hauling *****,faster than most 67/80,astonishing turning ability and any issue till now turning a 1657 mod.Last week just to see her limits removed my Picco 45 and installed a Mac 67 .......now I can say WOW! however I had to replace the rudder servo for a stronger one and put a longer blade rudder......I do inttend to run it in a saw event.Garson take a close look to your bend and check it out for some descolouring in the brass tube...maybe your S bend is not smooth enough and produced too much heat to have a break like this.

here is the JAE 45 with my Mac 67 Silver head, carb .550, parabolic pipe at 10 1/2 and H 32 mod .This motor is my back up motor so burned very few tanks of fuel.

Not trying to start anything but I struggle with any hull where the motor sits flat. To me, the drive shaft has way too much "S" bend in it with this set-up. I'm not saying that it doesn't work. I just have a hard time with the feel of the shaft when it hits the second bend. I always run an "S" bend drive but only slight. You should be able to spin the prop and it bounce back when the piston hits compression. Just an opinion.

Which rudder do you guy's use? I don't know which to use that's 2" beneath the ski.

Fredrik,

Mike Hallam sells a 1" custom rudder blade designed and built by a local machinist. 7075 aluminum and quality second to none. It's basically the Speedmaster mini rudder blade made 1" wide. It will bolt on to the mini rudder bracket and comes longer for this type of application. Absolutely perfect for SP .40 and .40 hydros. Check with him for availability.

Stan, yes just like Rod and Martin have said. Mike built me a boat from the short kit and I highly recommend it!!!! I put the motor as far back as the bulkhead would allow and made a NICE GENTLE Sweeping S bend in the stuffing box with ball bearings in the strut and it seems to work great so far.

Glenn
Glenn,

What are you using for the ball bearings in the strut?

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff, I use 5/16 X 3/16 bearings from Boca. I use four of them...2 together just in front of the drive dog and about a 1" space and then 2 more together.

I sell Speed Master struts with cables set up for bearings just like I use on my boat.

Glenn,

Thanks for the info, I've been wanting to do a ball bearing strut for a while now but haven't been able to find the right size bearings to design one around. How long are these lasting before you have to change them out?

Jeff, they last a long time...I run them for several seasons usually (but I don't run that much).

Jeff, I have a ballraced strut with the bearing sizes like Glenn listed on my 21 JAE, I used 3, 2 at the prop end and one at the ferrule end. I lubricate them with grease. I have run over 25 litres of fuel in the boat and the bearings are still good, they outlasted the con-rod in the engine!!

Glenn, I made my strut with bearings, but that was a bit of work, I am interested to see what is available.

Ian, do you have any pictures of your setup as well? Im very interested in doing this with my rigger. It would be pretty simple I think, since my strut is made from machine grade PVC II. Glenn, please post pictures of yours as well!
