I bought a new set of 5-AAA 6 volt 700 mAH for my .12 rigger a couple weeks ago, and they are in a flat pack configuration. I want to reconfigure these in a 3 cell "stick" set alongside a 2 cell "stick, like this:

--

How best do I get the old connectors off? (there are thin metal strips connecting the individual cells) File em?

To reassemble, is this just a simple solder job? Should I use thin metal strips (as they are now) for a connection or wires? How do I fasten the cells together in the desired configuration - epoxy? (they currently are shrinked wrapped kind of plastic)

If the tabs are soldered together just unsolder them. Then when you get the bat in the configuration you want re solder the tabs.

As for holding the bat together just use some epox it dose not take much to hold them together. then cover with heat shrink.

PS "DO NOT" solder directly to the bat bad things will happen!!!

Todd,

I've built many battery packs, more for RC car racing than receiver packs, and the principals remain the same. I am going to asume you know how to assemble and avoid dead shorts.

1. The metal strips you speak of, just take needle nose pliers and pull them off. They are machine assembled using those tabs and I don't think worthwhile to reuse them.

2. Normally I would send you to the hobby store to get some battery bars but they are too long for this application. Strip some short copper wires. (Take some off an old servo or something)

3. Tin about 2 " of this wire with solder, making one long piece then cut into lengths that will go from one positive end to a negative end.

4. You might consider using a hot glue gun to configure your battery as you wish. Some electrical tape around the entire pack for finish works fine. (Some people use CA glue to hold the batteries together) Make sure you do not allow the battery metal cases to touch each other. You should try and keep the individual shrink wrap on each cell.

Good Luck,

Bill

For battery bars for the small cells, I use some K&S brass plate. I got a piece that is 1" x 12" x 1/16". I just use metal shears and cut the size I need.

I'll mail you a piece of cooper foil to make connection. please, give me shipping adr. Boris

Thank you for the responses! I'm new to all this as you can tell.

Boris, I sent you a PM.

I can see it now..."Poof No Eyebrows"
Yeah, That'll go well with the 1/16 hole I drilled in my index finger this weekend setting up my sponson tubes!
you can solder to bat just be careful don't use to hot of an iron. Use rosin core solder and flux. Also keep your iron clean with a wet sponge ,wipe the iron on the sponge to clean.

Keeping every thing clean is the trick, the wet sponge cleans off the iron like a dream.
