Hi,

I’m partway through building my first Outrigger (first boat) I’m stuck on how the flex shaft Collet is attached to the engine. I have noted that the Uni joint for a straight shaft is screwed onto the crankshaft. But the flex shaft Collet that I was sent has no thread in it at all.

Do I need to thread the Collet the same as the Uni joint system or is there another way of securing the Collet to the crankshaft?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Welcome to IW Ted!

To answer your question - The collet should be a threaded type, to screw onto the crankshaft. I'd say the one you were sent is for an electric motor.

What sort of engine is it that you have? Do you know the thread type on the crank?

Tim,

Thanks for the info. I picked up an OS .21 engine with a tuned pipe in an old mono hull off eBay the other day. After reading your reply I ran a couple of dia’s over the crankshaft thread, the dia that run cleanly up and down the thread was a NF28 ¼”.

I suppose I had better order a collet for an .21 IC Engine, any suggestions were I should try?

Regards Ted

Ted,

Yeah most 21's use 1/4"-28.

Ozspec hobbies, Hobby Supplies, Excell Products - they all should have them and do mail order.
