hopping up a Pay-n-Pak Sport 20

I have a new Dumas Pay-n-Pak sport 20 I'm gonna go run. However what are some tricks people are doing to make them faster, or more stream-line? Since I can't get a Grim cowl I was thinking of hacking off the rear tail wings that are or appear to be like a parachute. Any thought on that? How low should I cut??

Also, is there any advantage to upgrading the original stainless steel ruddar blade included in the Dumas kits to a Speed Master?

Lastly, the paint is near perfect, not 100% but I was giving some thought to removing the lettering, sanding the boat and repainting it. The decals are on GOOD....any tricks to getting them off?/

Rodney I'ed remove the wings all the way to the deck ,and make a cowl as low as I could get away with and still have about 1/4 " of room aroung engine and pipe..Change the raido box to the front...Bring it over and will see what we can do..

Hey Rod,

on the one that i bought the engine from you for, I took some advice from grim. I did not use the lifts on the bottom of the sponsoons, and (wade and I) did not build the origional cowel (sp) I have yet to get time to run it, since i still need some peices to finish it, but i can give you some photos of the one we built, and the ones i got of one grim built at the internats last year (04) if you would like

BTW Cy, I fingured out a mount for your pipe without having to mount it to the radio box at all. I hope you like it, when I get it finished up, I'll add the pics to my gallery.

Hey Rodney..... Mike Z and Big Bryon modded the hull quite extensively, Bryons boat hauled the mail, they had an air trap(?) blocker underneath, to lessen the amount of air through the tunnel, alotta weight, etc, theyre probably still at nats, Id wait till they got back, and theyll share what exactly the hull needs.... dont know, not much help here, ive got a freind with the same boat (new) and we're gonna start the frustration soon, good luck, and, anyone else sharing mods to the boat would be appreciated, thanks mike

well guys, i gotta say i am sorry. i searched and searched for my pics of the internats and cannot find them i don't know if they got lost when my hd crashed, or if they got put on a backup disc somewhere that i cant find. either way, i am sad to say i think they will remain lost... however i did find this in my personal messages from grim

The sponson bottoms should have about 4 deg of positive angle of attack. In other words the when sitting on the sponsons the back of the boat is tilted up.

The right sponson should have Odeg dehidreal and the left 1.5deg.

No need for the ride pads.

Those pictures of your boat look nice. Looks like a great start to a nice boat. Mine was built more to the schematic of the blue print than w/improvements in mind. Which, is no biggie...I can fix it up. The only worry is up under the nose area, the joint of hte nose to the bottom deck is an odd shape, I might have to putty or glass an even bed of area to make it stream line. If I can get pix I will show you what I mean.

My oldest son will be racing the boatr once it's done. He's getting better at driving by practicing w/a 7.5 tunnel.

Bob, the front of the cowl is slipped under a piece of piano wire that I put 90deg bends at each end. I drilled holes in the leading edge of the tunnel (hardwood) & epoxied them in place. To get the spacing correct, I had the cowl in place & pushed the wire into the holes until the wire just touched. Then I pulled the cowl out so as not to epoxy the cowl in place. I'll take some close-up's & add them to my gallery.

Bob, I will confess I didn't think of it either, I Looked through Intlwaters gallery for pictures of Pay-n-pak's until I found some examples. I saw that on one of them & used it myself.

Rodney, Thanks for the complement. That "Missy Wild Thing” I built for my wife. Her name is Missy, & she can be a Wild Thing!! So it just fit. LOL!!! :lol: I will admit that I have run it a lot more than she has though :huh:

Cy, I'm glad you like the pipe mount. I mad it out of some 90 angle aluminum I had found somewhere. I cut it out with a hack saw, & & took it to work with me to use a disk sander to make t even & to radius the edges. I then filed it smooth & polished it up. BTW, I polished & balanced you prop yesterday as well.

Just got to this post..

Our early paynpaks are stock.. the ride pads were about the only thing we removed. The wood in the kits was even used and liked.. We have built a special jig just for this boat and have build quite a few.

Now..

Squeaks is VERY different.. we moved the aft plane and changed the depth of the sponsons and air traps. The sponsons bottoms are different too.. We built a quick and easy motor mount and the boat is starting to come together. Squeak raced it at the Internats but missed the needle in the first few heats.. this boat has a entire new ride attitude and if all goes well we might pull a set of molds off the hull... Its very fast..

The stock kit is lots of fun to drive and will bust out 50mph if you have it right.. We have went 55 with the boat but its a crapshoot if its going to stay on or not.. If you can run 45 to 47 with the thing you are in for a lot of fun.. to tell you the truth its fun to drive at any speed...
