What about carb cleaner??? Will that break the crust on it?

Just a thought here.

Mike, when your rims turned black was the stuff kinda thick and flake off when you cleaned it? The stuff on my engine is comming off in flakes and is pretty thick. I'm not too worried about cleaning the out side of the engine, it's the inside that I'm worried about. I need to get all of it off or it's going to work loose lator when it's running. Not to mention that the bearings won't fit back in it untill the stuff is removed.

Tom isn't carb cleaner the same as break cleaner?

I haven't had much time to work with it latley, but this weekend I'm going to try some of the ideas that you guys gave me.

you might try Hydroseal which is a carb clearer that you dunk the part in. It is much stronger than the spray.

If this "black" is actually a crust then you might try to thermal cycle the components. This would help in loosening the the crusted layer.

If you ask the jewelry store real nice they might try to clean it for you in the ultrasonic. Or maybe one of the guys here would do it for you.

I would think that the crust has a physical bond to the materials (lack of a bonding agent) since you aren't really desolving it. Soaking in a chemical would only help if there was a chemical bond or if you were disolving it. This is why I think the ultrasonic or temperature method is your best bet. Just a thought.

Prestion I think your on to something about the cleaning agents not working. I tried break cleaner, lacquer thinner, and a few others and the stuff doesn't disolve away. It comes off in small flakes. There for a ultrasonic cleaner might be the best way to go about it. I'm going to Harbor Freight this weekend, I'll have to see if they have a ultrasonic cleaner at a reasonable price. I was hoping to get away with out it, but looks like nothing elce is working.
