Shameless self-promotion, Mike. I love it! Makes the world go 'round, :D

After all, I did spend over thirty years in advertising

The boat on our website is form the land of OZ and he said that sometime he would like to bring it to the US and race it.

He states good performance and he is looking in to making some slight updates..

As a side note i was granted the opportunity to build a FE Villain S1-E for a friend and the boat came out at 1lb 4.5oz ready for paint. It was a great chance to think and live the FE lifestyle for a few weeks. Im sure we will get some pics up of the boat when its done. I must say that the Villain S1 is likely over engineered for Nitro racing. Its weight is not a problem but there are places to take away weight and not sacrifice strength.

WHAT!!!!!! I hope that was just the hull not including the cowl. I came out at 1lb 10oz with the cowl. That included a full length radio box too.

Paul,

Is your full length radio box going to house the batts as well, and be sealed before the cowl goes on? Just asking because David (the boat on Grimracer) is looking for a way to keep his batts a bit drier.

It's awesome with an 8XL too!

Scott.

Yes, everything is self contained. I don't have any pics of the setup yet but I will post them at some point. Problem is I spent a TON of time figuring out the best way to set the boat for FE and It's a bit hard to give up the ghost if you know what I mean. ;)

if you are going to do an E version could you make the radio box the bottom 2/3's or the cowl with a slide or clip top to finish the cosmetics

this way the radio box is hugebut can be in two parts and the boat is light

Andrewg,

Im not sure we are going to do an FE version. However when this is all said and done we might have a good exchange of information as to how to build and set up the Villain S1 best for FE. The one pound 4.5 oz villain has:

Thinned sponson formers

----I had something here but better keep it to myself for now---

----Same here-----

balsa stringers with the exception of the chine

modified motor box

----this one too----

1/32" ply sponson bottoms laminated with .75oz per sq class cloth

the rest is mostly stock.

Some of the above changes were requested by the boats owner but the re-design and re-placement of materials was up to me.

I love you man...

Hi Mike,

Your mods are interesting. Not sure I would have done some of the things you did but it's not my boat. :D Dennis was talking to me about the one he was working on and mentioned cutting the sponson former centers out. I asked him what happens if he gets a hole popped in a sponson and it fills with water? I thought about going with lighter materials on the sponson bottom until I remembered what happened to a rigger I built that way. Lets say for as light a hit it took there wasn't much left.

It will be interesting since I have to go head to head with that boat, will the 5 ounces make a difference? Only time will tell. B)

Paul.

PS: Kelly, you'll come back.

Paul,

You put on a good show but behind that Andre the Giant figure beats a heart of sludge! er I mean simulated gold! ;)

Paul,

Yea we will have to see.. as for cutting out the formers.. either way as far as im thinking.. A hole is a hole.. is a hole.. Cut a hole, get a hole, make a hole.. water comes in and its nice to be able to get it out too.. either way for me.

Not sure that the lighter sponson bottoms means weaker bottoms.. time will tell. Lighter to me means coming off the corners faster... that is about the only advantage.. heck its a big one too.....

You never know.. once the boat leaves my shop (this sat) it could gain weight. Tunnels are not about light weight but rather weight placement.. light weight is not a bad thing however. I like light.. My Villain S1 sport nitro tunnel is 3lbs 14oz rtr...

ROCK ON

Hey Guys,

Church of Alan, BWAAAAA!

Kelly,

Are you saying Ole' Grimracer reminds you of PeeWee?

Mike, I think I'll be happy if I can get the RTR weight around 4 1/2 pounds. Don't know if that will be do-able but I can hope. :D As far as the holes in the formers I'm just not sure that the boat wouldn't sink with the sponson filled with water. I lost a rigger that way when a hole was punched in the side of the tub, the foam was "supposed" to be enough to keep it on top of the water, not. The worst thing is if it gets neutural boyant, easier to find on the bottom of the lake. I think mine floated away just under the surface.

I have found a radio box desined for a controller and servo and radio at the transom saves some mass and keeps those power cables short - but it has to be compact or shaped to allow the cells to move - anything that lets us get that mass low as possible is good (gee dont you have a hull that does that?)

One other thing i noticed from the starks tunnel - that has a very wide tunnel - but it certainly lets that sucker fly very nicely with mild to wild power but needs sponson mods to help it turn.
