Hey Properchopper, thats fixable :

Well the fix was to build another VS-1. Just HAD to have a functioning tunnel in the fleet ! Raised the box in back to get servo & SC stacked & allows battery a little more rearward placement [for @ 8" from rear sponson tip CG]. Lets hull fly better with less drive angle. Does fine with the Tactic Tx/Rx & no antenna ; less aero drag LOL.

That Radio box looks awesome.
Thanks, Michael. Couldn't have been easier with "my little friend" in the picture. IIRC it was @ $ 109.00 at Home Depot and worth every penny when doing wood work. Since I've been running tunnels { Yup, you can blame Darin !}, I've been having a ball, especially racing neck-in-neck at speeds an old fart like me can handle/see. My next project is going to be rigging a DJ modded TS-2 for a SAW race - as the old saying goes : " Tune for Maximum Smoke " :D

I'll take the blame... it's worth it in this case! Most fun I've ever had racing model boats has been with tunnels...

Oh, and Tony... that is the BEST tool in my shop! I use it more than any other... even my brain sometimes... ;)

Here's another goodie that makes life easier : 6 " grinder with a wire wheel & buffing wheel. Gets used a lot as well.

Forgive me for digressing a moment, but while we're having a little tunnelfest, 'Ya gotta hear this : I was clowning for the crowd at the lake with the VS-1 making short/tight ovals in front of the driver's stand; gunned it straight ahead & turned [too] sharp, and she BROADSLID through the turn like a dirt tracker , completely level ! Didn't flip  . Shocked the poop outa' me & pleased the crowd a bunch. Won't try that again but it sure gave me some big giggles !

I just got back from the pond. This time with a radar gun!

Here is the setup:

VS1

Turnigy 120a marine ESC

UL-1 2030 motor

REK lower unit

Hyperformance adaptor

Zippy Flightmax 5000mah, 30c 4s1p Lipo pack

Straight out of the bag, not modified Grimracer 42x55 2 blade prop

The results...44mph on the radar gun, consistently, probably 10 passes, and it stayed at 43-44mph. I could not be happier with that. I think once the prop is worked it should pick up some speed????

Sand down ( i wet sanded the bottom surface of mine) fill in the gaps with good CA and then a nice coat of west systems. I mixed a bit of rubbing alcohol with the west systems to let it soak into the wood. Then re-wet sanded the surface. The ride surface is very strong now.

Spoon,

I can assure you the water is not going through the clear and then through the wood.. However it would make sense you have a loose seam or area for water to get inside.

Check the seams with a sharp object.. I you have a loose seam just 45 deg slit it and work in some epoxy.

Also.. Weather the boat comes with or without clear.. you can always sand down the clear and redo the boat.. The clear comes off easy enough.. i have done this to test clears on my boats and my PPG and Sherwin Williams goes on just fine. Before you re-clear that you can use west systems or Hobbypoxy for extra seam strength.

Hope this helps

Also.. let me state.. AFTER YEARS of testing.. the offset is NOT causing the boat to lean in the corners.. Truth is you likey have to much steering movement.. you know it only takes a small amount to get the boat around the cource..

Grim,

As far as the boat leaning I did not explain that well, and it came off wrong..I am having not trouble with it steering anymore..The problem today was actually while I was running straight...The water was really rough 2-3" waves..maybe bigger in spots, and the front of the tunnel would catch a wave, take the bow down enough to cause it to swerve hard to the right. It would only catch that right side of the hull as the weight of the battery, and the offset of the cowling area makes it sit a little lower on the right side, causing it to catch the rough water on that right side first, hence the swerve. It really was rough water, and I probably should not have been running it in that rough of conditions anyways. I don't oval race, so having that offset is really nothing I need. I will say this, I may complain about some minor things, but it is, in calmer water, and incredible handling boat, and is very forgiving. It is obvious you put a lot of work and time into creating it, and it is probably my favorite boat, and I love it enough to not mind buying another one to build! I will say this too, the boat loves the FE setup, probably more than the nitro setup. I have yet to actually blow it off, and when it was nitro I was never able to get it tuned right to stop it from blowing off. I will update again when I mod the Grim 42x55 prop. I would love to see some pics of a properly backcut 42x55 prop if anyone has any?

Here's my attempt to do some de-tounging & a little cupping. I'll try her out tomorrow & post results.

When people say cup the prop..what are they doing exactly? Just wondering.
Michael, the best way I can explain it is : look at the left picture; The lower left portion of the prop is bent slightly toward you; I believe this narrows and strengthens the thrust cone. Brian's the master at this, hopefully he can chime in. :)

Usually, placing the end of the prop over a steel ball and whacking it with a hammer. Giving the end of the blade a 'cup' shape. Different size balls for different size cups. Sounds erotic huh?

Well, Got my new VS1 in the mail today, so this one is up for sale if anyone is interested. It will come with the hull, steering setup, and servo horn. All the electronics and motor will be removed. I am going to do a totally different setup on the new hull, so this one has to go!

Any price in mind, shipped to 81005?

I just sent you a PM.

Michael, I ran last week with the detounged/slightly cupped prop, and was not overly impressed. Bear in mind I was using some older 4S 30C Elite 5300's. Put in a new Zippy 4S 30C 5000 that I just got and OMG !! Boat flew. Literaly began to "fly the hull" ! CG at 8" from rear sponson tip, about 5 deg up on the drive. I'm totally jazzed - no GPS but if it wasn't very close if not right at 50 mph I'll eat a receiver pak.
