i asked the same question to a world champ and his explanation was short and simple.

"You can run a larger hull which handle race water conditions better than a smaller hull".
 
i feel I can run as fast as the fast guys (high 40's) but do it "tight" therefore handling race water better. :rolleyes:

Gear drives are torque multipliers. Assuming they're all under drives (output gear larger than input gear) the prop speed is lower than the engine speed directly proportional to the gear ratio. However, prop torque is higher than engine torque, again proportional to the gear ratio. The picture Terry Keeley posted just above me is of an under-driven gear setup.
