someone please clarify these gas scale drive dog location rules with illustrations if possible.

IMPBA :

"The drive dog must not extend beyond the transom unless the prototype's strut and-or drive dog did so"

NAMBA :

"The propeller drive dog may extend one drive dog length beyond the transom"
 
If the real boats propeller was passed the transom pretty far back and you can prove it then you can have the drive dog out from under the boat. That's IMPBA.

Reads like NAMBA is only the length of the drivedog can extend passed the transom.
 
Dave if you build an early boat the dogs were under the transom. If you dare move it back you need proof it ran that way aka a real good transom shot. Most all newer late 80s were behind transom. Hope this helps
 
I have not seen any real piston powered unlimiteds with it extending past transom so if the one you're modeling is piston powered keep drive dog behind the transom. And like Mike said have a good transom shot for proof depending on the boat.
 
From the NAMBA Rulebook:

Gas Scale Unlimited Hydroplane racing will follow Scale Unlimited
Hydroplane rules in Section 21 ---.

Boats will be painted, configured, and detailed like the actual unlimited as it ran on
the water. The acquisition of documentation validating a paint scheme, cowling
configuration, engine configuration, or other scale details will be the responsibility of
the boat’s owner. Photographs of the boat are an acceptable form of documentation.

The number of props and rudders will coincide with that of the original full sized
unlimited hydroplane.

Outdrive units and outdrive engine(s) are prohibited unless the full sized boat after
which the boat is being modeled had an outdrive or outdrive engine(s), in which case
the model must be configured like the full sized boat.

The propeller drive dog may extend one drive dog length beyond the transom.

What it comes down to is any boat built prior to the Bud T-5 hull probably had the prop under the hull so the model should be built to the same set up. Any of the new style T-5 clones probably have a strut that extends to or past the transom so the drive dog can be partially or fully out from under the boat and be scale, regardless of the allowances in the rules. A little research needs to be done with any boat built after 1990 to verify what kind of strut was used

I replied to this one time before!!! It depends on the Hull you have in IMPBA evidently NAMBA would just rather ban anything built since the mid 1980's?? The Winston Eagle Lobster was built with a transom mounted strut and Qualified and competed as an Unlimited Hydroplane.. They had a Miss Budweiser on display at the Central Florida Boat Show back in the mid 90's that had a transom mounted strut so if the real ones have them and we are attempting to be true to scale why not have rule follow that thought??
