 OK, time to pull out some mattress money. That is great! I'm real glad to see gas come of age ;)

In the gas boat beginning, they were dogs, we snickered at them and that's why I had no interest... Boy Times Have Changed. Now there is no drawbacks of running gas, only good things it seems. Us nitro fiends are already heavily outnumbered around here by the gas boats. Gas engines have infused our sport with much needed new boaters in the past several years.

With regret, because of economic viability, I'm predicting that the big block nitro marine engines could possibly be going the way of the Dodo bird within a decade.... well, maybe 2 decades ;) That would suck huh? I hope I'm wrong about that, but these other options are tempting.

You will have to pry my nitro big blocks from my cold dead hands!!!!!!!!!
LOL Mike, I feel the same way. As time goes by, I hope enough of the new guys will still feel the same way we do about the nitro rush. ;)

Oh yeah, congrats to the guys that set that speed. Amazing!

Not as long as I'm running! Ran my twin yesterday (pair of 84's) and between that awesome sound of a twin & coming out of a tight corner (practice pond is a little tight especially for a twin) repeatedly at over 80 mph there will ALWAYS be big blocks in my stable. A little more tweaking & it should be heat racing over 90 consistently. This year's gonna be fun! :D :D

CONGRATS to Mike Bontoff and Jeff Michaud on the first 100 mph passes with gasoline.

I think they were running Zenoah and QD.

I'm sure more details may be found on Jim's R/C Boat Dock.

Gas = good, but

NITRO ROCKS!!!

Yes there is more info on Jims, I hear you on the sound of twins, and nitro being faster, but damn to get a gas engine over 100.

I beleive Jeff M. Of insane boats ran 103. His rigger and a M&D 260.

Definitely a tremendous acheivement going over 100 with gas. :)

Jim's RCBD is abuzz with comments. The record was broken several times so far with Jeff on top at the moment. Michael Bentoft and Lohring Miller had it for a short time.

Yes, we haven't seen anything yet this year! I expect to see a lot more speed records broken. Come on Andy, us Nitro burners want to see you really give them a speed to chase after!

Congrats to the people that did a Helluva job getting those big boats going that fast, this is a major accomplishment.

Look on Jim's in the next day or 2 for vids and pix galore, they said that there was a lot of cameras there shooting the runs.

I got a phone call today from Legg Lake. GAS- 106 mph..... Mike Bontoff with QD power.

Awesome Mike!!!!

Nitro still ROCKS!

You guys should check out the pics of the new QD engine (like they used toset the record) even if you don't care for gas. It's an investment cast and CNC'd barstock engine like the original QD-25 but they've turned the Jug 90 degrees to place the exhaust port on the rear and the carb on the front. There is a unique SS flex section in the header pipe to end the old pipe cracking problems and the steel cylinder sleeve is hardened to take care of the earlier engine's piston and ring wear problems. And like the other QD's, it uses a bolted-on head button, but with the new 10 mm spark plug. The new cylinder, piston and head button will fit the old engine, too.

And if you're not ready to spend what the QD costs, buy a stock Zenoah G260 for $250 and do your own piston and port mods. They're real responsive to mods and will fly. Not 103, but good enough to go racing.

Congrats to Mike B and the others who ran over 100 B) An amazing feat.

- now I guess I have to consider Gas engines as something other than lawn maintenence equipment

2003/04 - not so good for nitro records - but gas and electric have come along in leaps and bounds!

Mike-

How about posting some pics of the new QD?? :D

Andy the new rear exhaust isn't available yet on the market only mike has one QD probobly told him to use the side exhaust since that's what there selling.

I just got back from Legg Lake with Mike. Jeff's rigger is the G1 record holder with a two way average of over 99 mph. He had a 102 best one way run. Mike Bontoft is the GX1 record holder with a two way average of 102 mph. His best pass was 106. Mike ran 106 several times, even in the hottest part of the day, but was not able to back up the runs. Both boats were running Andy's modified 2170 props.

Mike was running the side exhaust Quickdraw. We brought two different engines and set the records with the most conservative engine. We tested the rear exhaust Quickdraw, but the boat needs more tuning time. The rear exhaust engine is more powerful than either of our side exhaust engines. We think this is just the beginning of real speeds from gas engines. Both records were raised by more than 10 mph. The GX1 record was set only last fall.

Mark Grimm now is the NAMBA X Hydro record holder with a 119 two way average. His best pass was over 121. There were several other nitro boats running over 110.
