There weren't too many of them made that I know of. I do know that Brian Dusette has one of them and he had to extend the tub on his as it was too short.

I was afraid to post about mine.... Mike didnt need any more guys furthering his discourse..... My trade went well with him, and, although i cant get ahold of him, i was happy with the kit, his work, and all..... Mine's done.... as my entrance into the gas realm may start..... a 1667, huh?..... I been asking around a bit too, for possible starting prop options.... planned on leaning on Mark oncet' i can afford a guess...... Tub's too short?.... dont say that...... i get to look at mine for a few more months, painted of course..... personally, as heavy as mine turned out, it'll be interesting to see how quickly i may lose interest in it.... it's just an entrance build for me... if it works, great!.... While, I look to gain "Zenoah elbow" from pullin on it.... and razzing from my buddies if it quits... i'm gonna give it a shot.... Thinking 2716, 2818, 6719...... post on Jim's... well......

Thanks for help, plenty of gas/nitro rigger guys about..... Mike

mike no need for zen elbow..get a pulley for your starter and use the one in your box..you know the kyfho box.lol them pulley setups look pretty neat

The trick is learning to start a Zen or any gas engine for that matter. Pull it over and choke the carb with your thumb or whatever finger seems to fit over the carb until slightly wet with gas. Open the carb half-way, give it a yank and usually they'll start within a couple of pulls. Another option is to use an EZ Starter, they pull like there's no compression! CC Racing and some others sell those.

I tried a "Geezer Wheel" that replaces the pull-starter. The belts have a nasty habit of popping off and slapping the Bejesus out of your wrist. The one that Speedmaster makes is better as it goes on the other end like most nitro engines and has the cable collet built in.

If it were me... I'd pass on the Viper. Buy something that provides support like the Whiplash. Just do a search on Jim's and see a bunch of negative feedback. Basically, if you break something or need parts you'll be on your own. Also, from what I've seen of Mike's boats, the workmanship isn't what I would call "mint". And that's being kind. lol

Yeah, well.... T, I am thinking on the pulley thing, a little.... affording it right now is beside the point.....

As far as the "elbow"..... it's a little point of humor so far to me, to watch, when the clock starts, 6 or 8 guys in the pits yankin and yankin and pullin, just as fast as they can.... like OMG it's flooded, pull man, pull...... c'mon visualize it!..

Aaaanyway.... its a mess around hull for me, for the most part, as I'm in it for trades a year or more ago.....

It does sit, painted, of course, because I had the assumption that Canada must be where all the footballs in the plywood go.....

Mike's work was great, everything was square and straight, while I did incorporate some known building aids into mine....

Mine lacks a fuel bag, IV, yet and a prop, which, I'll gain before the water liquifies hopefully.....

I've hope it goes... Marty, and the guys yelling, that at 2.50 a gallon and it wont run, have me crossing my fingers, all in fun...... course, he'll tire of launching it quickly..... it weighs..... thanks guys Mike

im sure i have a prop you can try..mike if not we both have prop guages , i am possitive we can cobble one up to make it work so she will take. if it is indeed a tank better get some baby floaties and wrap em around the tub for "extra protection"..lol

tk

I like the baby floaties idee..... i'd sure hate to estimate the weight... and... I didnt over do it on the epoxy...

thanks Mike for the suggestion.....

Terry, we'll see.... i'm doing the 3 month ice thing as you are.... plus you have like what is 12 times a day feeding right now?.... burp, and puke?.....

Hot modded M and D with some kind of 1 inch pipe Tom gave me..... which, i think, would push a 2x4 fairly quickly given i'd built it..... Dont know.... gas aint my thing..... more than likely wont be..... boat goes... maybe....

If, i wasnt into the boat for what I was, it wouldnt be there.... and.... if it dont go.... I have a RR waiting in the wings for the motor, and some work.... we'll see.... it's like wtb: 6719/3.....looks like.....

The real bad thing Terry, is, there aint no Gas riggers for us to race with around, far as I know.... throw 'em in with the F's?...

So, i'm isolated, which made gas Tom, sell his earlier..... IDK.... I dont plan on installing too much time in it unless it maiden rocks, when, I can beat the speed with my bird' and like, idk, 1/8th the engine displacement... 'an a little nitro.. lol....

We'll see... too many hulls to shake out, and stupid..... I yam. Mike

well mike when i get the race series setup here , we are going to be racing every other week at our lake , and trying to promote more racing and new guys getting involved..plus for many like myself i may not get to go to the races that much and want to race my stuff. i have a gas rigger in the works and you have one, i bet bruce would throw one together and there we are. plus i am going to have open gas class anyhow so we will make a race no matter. plus of course 20 tunnel and rtr stuff will be happening. get my drift, somethign for everyone..cedar rapids boys, decatur fellas , everyone..i jsut want the club to grow and all of us to race more often.

The pulley for using an electric starter was one of the first pieces that I bought when I started to build my boat. I had been collecting parts for the better part of a year. I still need to finish that thing. One more project to go (JD new starter setup), and then it is back to my boats. The gas hydro is about 80 compelte. Shoudl get to that next week.

the guy did a run of vipers they were about $200 each and all you hear are complaints(not saying that they aren't valid and i'm not commenting on the builder as an individual he got a whole lot of bashing on JIMS already...what do you expect for a 200 boat? it's not going to look like a 900-1000 boat in terms of finish and expensive material but you could beat a 1000 boat with that same 200 boat on any given sunday! yeah i'll agree that it could have been built better(better material would then drive the cost up) he could have used finer grit sand paper to finish the sponsons (that's what paint is there for) that too would drive the cost up,but guys the boat cost 200 bucks if your pockets are deep and you want to spend a grand for just a boat then go ahead. but if you want to try a class at minimum cost i think other than building your own stuff it wasn't a bad choice, at least for me. yes i too own one. at the end of the day you(the racer) have to still set the boat up and get it to run and WORK on it. So if you want a turn key boat BUY A TURN KEY BOAT if you want a challenge and if you want to go in a different direction than the masses build your own boat or if you're considering the Viper give it a chance the worst that can happen is that you tried it and then u can swap all your major gear into something else. my 2 cents

Leighton.... That was exactly my opinion in my post..... It is, an entry level build for me, I didnt, expect more than a 200 dollar build, and I didnt, expect a turn key boat at any rate..... never do.... I'll not bash Mike nor defend him, as we made a deal, and he treated me well.... his business is his business, and i'm good with that.....

this post, will bring further crap down on mike he doesnt need, which, I could, or choosing not, add fuel to the fire..... I stated objection to even commenting, for that same fact...... but I have one, built, as best I could, and it needs a prop, so I jumped in......

Granted its an obvious fact, that, men live for controversy, apparantly, on the forum here, and almost worse on Jim's..... be it business moves, or personal build descisions, or just about anything, nowdays, publicly enjoying typing, there isnt any scruples anymore..... surely, I can find better things to do, and if more people would worry about the things that are important, it might take me more than five minutes each morning to maybe learn something, and gain my boating experience.....

Basically, its an outrigger....my first gas outrigger..... i'll set it up like my other outriggers, and throw it..... if it has quirks, i'll work on it given known knowledge from my nitro stuff..... I did learn which propellor to start with, an object of my search, and if it works, Great!.... there's little gas following in my area, and while i'll take known knowledge and apply, I will, give the hull its chance, and see.......

Lets open it up a little bit, like, table to tub height, front and rear sponson AOA's,toe in?. strut height, and angle, maybe even turn fin height, just for the hell of it.......

Getting information out about a certain hull and each person's experience with it, is where its at..... where i'm at. Granted i'll still take the info about somebody's orange, and maybe it works on my apple......

8 weeks to pulling on it..... hopefully, i'm close..... Mike

Leighton,

Your point is absolutely valid. They were massed produced quickly for a low price. And that included the Predator, which immediately preceeded the Viper. The real problem with them were the sponsons not having sharp edges. They were rounded a lot in the final finishing. A good deal of reforming with epoxy is needed to get those edges sharper again. The tub was fine and well built. He used good materials and put CF in the hull interior sides & bottom, external sides of the hull and on the bottom of the sponsons. Actually a lot of work for about $250. It is not on the level of an Eagle, Crapshooter, Roadrunner, etc. However, it does not cost a lot of $$ like they do.

I am thinking of a gas rigger build and am planing on building it my self. What options are there for plans.

Would ask on the dock but you know how that would turn out.

David
