I am building a new 20 rigger and need to know what the formula is for calculating the volume in ounces of a fuel tank. L x W x H x ? The tank is an unusual shape and I need to know the capacity.

Thanks,

Marty , L X W X H in inches , divided by 231 (number of cubic inches in a gallon ) = gallons , divided by 128 = ounces . try to arrange the tank into triangles and rectangles figuring their volume individually IE a triangle that will form a rectangle if you use two triangles then divide the volume by two etc .

LxWxH divided by what ever figure is used to determine volume in ounces. I work with volume in cubic yards almost daily and there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard so the formula is LxWxH divided by 27.

Tom:

The tank is .875" High x 3" Wide x 5 1/4" long. Your formula would be .875x3x5.25=13.78/231=.059659/128=.000466 Something is wrong here.....

Hi Marty,

Doing the same math you did i came up with 4.660866oz

Paul

Hmmm if I do the same problem exactly like you have it typed i get your answer, if i leave all the decimal places i get the 4.660866

The formula that i use is HxWxL/1.8= oz

yours would be 7.65625 ozs

Thanks....
marty is that gonna be a saw tank ? that sounds really small for a heat tank ..mine in my blackbird is 10.8 oz and it is light when it gets back..just some thought.

tk
Marty,Using my formula I come up with 7.55 oz.

7.55136986301 too be exact. :D Marty's a perfectionist!  B)

Heat race boat. I have a little more room, so I wanted to see what I had and also what I needed. How much fuel do you think is needed for a 20 hydro?

Walt:

How much do you usually recommend for a 20 hydro? Not sure what I have now for the current boat, but I bet that you know.

I tried to send you a message in your box, but it would not accept. Need to clean it out?

Marty,

10 to 12 ounces is plenty for heat racing, depending how good

your pipe and motor combination are working. It sounds like you

are getting ready for the Hobart race. With an on board battery

you will burn a little more fuel with a richer needle valve. We

are having Very Good Performance with this set up.

I have been wanting to build a new 20 boat for a long time. Usually when someone thumps me at a race, it makes me start thinking about it. I got thumped by Lackey's old 20 boat and I didn't like it much :(

I am getting ready for Hobart. I hope the economy gets better so that I can justify it.

Might need some props for this new boat, will let you know. I have the center section and sponsons done, so I am anxious to get it finished. Was REALLY happy with the weight to this point. Might actually get a 20 boat to 3 1/4 lbs (or LESS).

Marty,

I have 8.5 oz in my 20 RR Extreme, NR engine and have about 1-1.5 oz left after a race. If you can get to 8.5 oz capacity you should be fine for heat racing. Especially with a NR but if you are running the MAC 21 like you did last Oct you will need the extra fuel capacity.
