I need some new bearings for an engine. The question I have is should the front bearing have two seals or just a seal on the outside side?

i only use one shield on the outside of the front bearing. The metal/rubber sheild. You can always remove one if it comes with two.

Boca bearing says it does not matter if you leave both shields on.It is a matter of preference.????????????

I personally only have 1 shield installed on the flywheel side to help prevent air from being sucked in. the rest are open.

Mark, i just use a shield on the flywheel side of the front bearing. Has been working ok, for 20+ years, so why change?lol Hope to get to the pond soon, and do some more testing. Richard D

Some bearings come with none, one, or two shields. If the small bearing has at least one metal shield, I leave it for the same reason as Tim. The big bearings needs no shields to get the proper oil flow.

I have always had good luck using phenelic retainers for both bearings and exterior metal shield only on the flywheel bearing.

Boca Bearing makes a rubber seal exterior shield bearing.I think that bearing is used for problematic motors where to much air is being drawn from the bearing.

Sounds goofy but that what they said. maybe its a dirty environment thing, like for cars or trucks.

Tim

bad idea to leave a rubber coated shield on.
