As long as it doesn't react with your sealer and paint, ( soften or bubble up ) I guess it would work...

I've heard of people using epoxy and baking powder, drywall paste, non silicone caulking,
all sorts of stuff...

I trust what I know works...microballoons and epoxy.
Mix it thick like toothpaste, and squeeze it in with a wet fingertip.
 
I use Epoxy and saw dust just like Ray said above, works well. Y
You can change the color just by having different timbers pre sawn/sanded into cups of saw dust and ready to go if/when you need them.
I use the Devon Epoxy when mixing a filler
 
System three use to have a trial kit was a good deal at time had wood flour ,microballons,milled plastic fibers and silica was good for experimenting
 
I used epoxy mixed with a cheap, scented, baby "talcum" powder as a general purpose filler when I restored my plywood runabout. Gave me a very fine surface to sand and a fragrant workshop ! :)
