Just checkin to see if anyone here has any info on how the SAW gang is doing in NC today.

Thanks!!

Walt,

I received a call from the pond today, and a few other OB records have been set also.

I know Carl and Mike are having a good weekend as far as records go. The records

may change today so why post the speeds? In the 60's for Stock 3.5 OB and the 70's for

OB Hydro.

Thanks For Reading,

Mark Sholund

The OB's were definetly on their game this weekend.

The 20 OB hydro record was smashed with a stock OS. Pretty cool.

I got a lot of 85 mph passes right to left with the whiplash, but the left to rights were only 79 to 80 mph passes. The record average was 82.417 mph, which only bumped the record a little bit. It was a stock fiberglass heat racing whip and the only things changed on the boat were a smaller turn fin, a larger prop, and a smaller rudder. Other than that it was a stock heat racer. I tried to blow it off the water but it wouldnt do it. I used an insane ceramic steel pipe, a dasboata 3018 prop, and a cut down speedmaster rudder. The fin was about an inch deep in the water. The motor was a 4 1/2 year old Butch Fields motor and the gas was Texaco 87 octane pump gas. That pretty much sums that up. The tunnel guys had some real screamers. I had a great time with a bunch of great people. It was a blast!

The following records were set:

John Finch LS 27 Sport Hydro 82.417 MPH

Mike Talley B Sport Outboard Tunnel 60.257 MPH

Carl Van Houten B Outboard Hydro 70.665 MPH

Kentley Porter/Bill Bigelow C Outboard Tunnel 63.541 MPH

Kentley Porter C Outboard Hydro 63.380 MPH

We all had a great time last weekend. The weather was great on Saturday. The day started well with Talley running a OS powered B sport tunnel Lynx. He sure makes it look easy with breaking the record on his second attempt. He sure can make an OS sing a pretty song and is the master when it comes to setting up and outboard! Next up was Carl running his latest creation B OB hydro with a OS sport engine(muffler no pipe). His third attempt he set the record. He ended up breaking the record 4 different times with a one pass at 71.38 MPH! Carls new boat is one of the neatest boat I have seen in a while. Next up was Bill Bigelow and myself we were running a Lynx with a Orlic Nova Rossi C engine. We finally ended up breaking the record. We were fighting the needle all day with all of my engines, ended up that I had water in one of my fuel components. Hey Bill, thanks for putting 4 different engines on the Lawless, I should have known the fuel was dicked sooner! Don Ferrette lit off the twin hoping to up his record. His second attempt was disasterous he hit a turtle or a stick or his rudder broke, the twin left the water and landed on the shore. That was a bad sound when he hit the shore!! Preston Hall was going after the LS 27 cat record with a scratch built boat. He broke the record several times one way but was having trouble backing it up. Preston was running a CC Racing engine in his cat. Carlo sure knows what to do to make them scream WOW! Mr Finch pulled out his Blazer LS 27 Sport Hydro he made several pass made a few changes then set the record. The Blazer boat sure rides well and is fun to watch. On Sunday Carl gave me is OB hydro to try for the C record my first attempt set the record. Then the wind started. Thats what Steve Sutton was looking for he tried several attemps with his gas Seaducer. He was very close to the record. However, the boat took several incredible dunks and got out of whack. I know Steve will be back next year.

I will like to Thank Cristi Hubbert for running the timming equipment, she always dose a good job and will sure set you stright if you don't tell what boat your running!! I lot of funny things happen this weekend. I am sure Preston will give you an update

See you guys next spring.

Funny things? You must be talking about farting in Hardees and leaving Bill in the mist to take the blame when another customer walked up.

Or was it when Bill was tanked up on an empty stomach and smoked the other end of the cigarette? Bill tried to play it off as a cold sore for a while.

Hello guys,

I had never been to Virginia before. Virginia must mean; the hospitality state. To all that made us feel very welcome and comfortable all weekend, Mike and I would like to say THANKS! Your site was as perfect as could be wished for. The trip was about eleven hours for us one way but was well worth every mile.

I built my first O/B hydro and I have to say, that it was fun! Grim Racer sent me some plugs that worked very well!

I noticed a jump in speed just by changing over to his plug. (No he didn't pay me to say that) As a matter of fact, Talley screwed in one of Grims plugs and went on to to break Eric Betty's 59.226 SAW record in the Sport 3.5cc O/B tunnel.

Great plugs Grim! THANKS!

Prop was purchased from Mark Sholund.

Who was it that told me that a O/S sport 3.5cc O/B engine could not run 70MPH?

The fun meter was pegged all weekend.

-Carl

Yup, the boating gods did not smile on me for sure. After much discussion with John and Steve over dinner Saturday night (while we were still sober :p ) we pretty much figured out the sequence of events of the crash. First attempt with a new set of props resulted in a very bad hopping condition so I brought the boat right in and went back to the props that I set the record with last fall. On the second outing John tossed the twin in to the left, I brought it around & cracked the throttles once going left to right down the back straight & the boat jumped right up so at that point I had decided to make one blast right to left to make sure it tracked well & then come in and shorten the pipes. Came around & lit 'er up, the boat was singing sweet and came through the traps at what I was told by Mr. Sutton after the crash just a tick under 107. From that point we figured the rudder blade failed just past the second timing light (the top half of the blade was still there, even the 4-40 shear bolt was intact with no signs of stressing whatsoever) which lifted the back as it tore off causing the right sponson tip to dig in shearing it off immediately, snapping the boat to the left and to the shoreline where it ultimately came to rest. Judging by the amount of wood that was still floating in the water after I picked the carcass up off the shore most of the damage occurred when it snap rolled left ripping off the sponson & rear shoes, flattening both strut blades over & sending both fuel tanks out through the bottom of the tub. It was not a pretty sight when it was over but it happened so fast you didn't even have time to say "OH S---!!!" For those who e-mailed & pm'd me wanting to know what went wrong it just took me a day to "get over it" and post what happened. I will rebuild the boat this winter to go at it again as I know beyond a doubt there is still a bunch more speed in it & we will go alot faster in '09. Even though it was a heartbreaker for sure the fact of being around a bunch of good people sure took the sting out of it. Nothing like friends and some alcohol later that evening to make one feel a little better. B)

Carl,

It looks like that propeller matched up rather well with the O.S. motor.

Glad you had success this past weekend in NC. 70.66 MPH WOW!!!

Thanks For The Business Carl,

Mark Sholund

Yes it did. make me another one just like it! I will need a back up in Huntsville in two weeks. I may squeeze out 74 or 75 mph with it there because I was running full water and never pulled a plug when i made the 71.4 mph pass.

-Carl,

Carl, Do you have any pics of your o/b outrigger? I sure would like to see this boat.

Thanks, Joe

Joe,

I will probably post a couple of pictures after I get back from Huntsville in two weeks. I want to see just how fast I can get a box stock (no modifications) O/S powerhead and muffler to run. I had to cut the calvitation plate in half to get that monster prop on and moved the skeg off to the right just as all the O/B riggers do so it would not be a true box stock engine with these modifications but I am just having a little fun with it until I put my 35+21 on it. Then it should really smoke out a low time.
