Hello everyone. I am new to the forums and to Model boating. I need to know what type of Grease do i need to get to put in the drive line. Are can i use a wheel bearing grease that is water prof. I have a seducer SD3 and a Tunnel hull with a K&B 3.5 on it. And can i use the same grease in both of them. Thanks

That is what i was thinking. don't see where you need any special grease for that. But i had to make sure Thanks

What i do found works great is i soak my new shafts in marvel mystery oil for about 2 weeks then when you are ready grease them you be able to go a full race day on that grease.

Do your self a big favor and get a oiler alot less drag than grease and alot less mess in boat hands and on you shirt
like pete said an oiler is the way to go, and further more the best one on the market is the woods oiler you can get one made by steve wood at woodrcboatproducts.com and it will be the best thing you ever do for your boat, simply everytime you get ready to run it is about as simple as turning on the transmitter, pump a little oil into it befoe starting and fire it and go, no grease on your hands and junk like that and they are the slickest looking things you will ever se as well.

Ok about this oiler On a K&B where does it put the oil in on the drive cable and foot. Do i have to drill and tap a hold for a fitting are is there some other way he has worked them out to get oil in there.Pic of one would be great are a link to a website Thanks

the oiler clamps to the stuffing tube.. you simply tighten the bolt down and drill a small hole thru the top of the stuffing tube and it drains down the tube and around the cable.

much cleaner than having one on the side of the boat.. and cables last ALOT longer with this system than grease.

George,

Mike Crawford is a top Tunnel racer in the US, I'm sure he can answer your question.

Shoot me a PM and I'll pass on his contact #.

I think I can answer this. All the K&Bs have a hole drilled in the side of the motor mount plate at the top of the lower unit, this is where you oil "BEFORE EVERY RUN" with 50:50 mix oil:STP, or straight castor oil (my preference). To make it a bit easier, drill and tap for a 2-56 size pressure fitting. Don't rely on greasing the cable, but do pull out at the end of the day for inspection. If it is a water cooled version which exhausts through the lower unit, it has a machined channel which also sends oil from the exhaust down to the prop shaft for lubrication, similar to the OSXM just not as elaborate a system. Obviously the newer versions of K&B with cannister muffler won't do this, the main thing is to oil the flexshaft before each run.

I went to Geraty's bearinged outshaft he said to use 50/50 stp and 10/40. I sealed the 7.5 K&B case halfs around the shaft sealed lower holes.Used the stiffer of the 2 shafts I had needed to change the softer ones every 1/2 gal or less. After 2gals it's still like new. I use old school pump oil can. I think I drilled the hole out a bit and chamfered it to seal at the tip of the oil can spout , a few shots in it a a couple drops at the shaft.PTO bearings seem to last a long time as well.

regardless of what you prefer to lube your flex cables with, you can make them last MUCH longer by doing one thing. get some parafin based wax (gulfwax, if it's still available), melt it in a DOUBLE BOILER (very important, parafin wax is very flammable), & soak your shafts in it. use 2 pairs on needle nose pliers & bend the cable back & forth to work the wax into the cable. do this every 2 or 3 months, & your cables will love you for it. on your ob's, get rid of the nylon liner & get geraghty or joe monahan to make a brass or stainless liner for it. the nylon ones wear out, & will bind up the cable, causing it to break. there's a reason you get 2 liners with every cable from k&b B) .........

hi boaters for the past 2 years i have been using a product called speed lube. it last a practise day and 2 race days no problems, im sure it comes from your house, the usa,mt mate got me some from a gas boater guy , i would check jims boat dock.. all the racers in australia use it,, cant beat it for indurance cheers jason..

Jason,

Eric Canto and I sold that for a year or so. I still have some if more is needed.

I sold it to Zach Price who sold it on his gas boat website. It is good stuff, which

is why we sold it. :D

Thanks,

Mark Sholund

I've been using Speed Lube also and got it from Mark a few years ago. It's in about a pint sized jar so it will last for years. I've still got Prather, Hughey and many others around but keep going back to the Speed Lube. The smell isn't bad either like a lot of other brands, similar to a polishing compound.

Zac's site is www.americanrcboats.com .

K&B recommends a 50/50 mix of STP and 20w50 racing oil on the outboards. When I ran them I drilled and tapped for a 8-32 pressure nipple into the side of the lower unit and used an oil can that had a Tygon-like flexible hose on it to inject the lube.

I stopped using grease years ago. Oil reserviors are the only way to go. I don't pull the drive cable until I clean up the boats at the end of a race weekend. STP and Marvel mixed 50/50. MAy try castor this year to see how easily it cleans up.
