Drive Dog Size

Which drive dog size, from OSE, is appropriate for an octura 1662 on a 1/4 to 3/16 shaft?

OSE has them in large, small and tapered. Thats, OffShoreElectrics by the off chance someone here does not know.

Strut width unknown at time of posting but fits 1/4 shaft.

put a 1/4 " drive dog on or you will snap the shaft were it steps down to 3/16 .

So the dog will be on the 1/4in part of the shaft then? Will that throw off the thread spacing for the bullet nut? OSE has the 1/4in dogs in 7/16in and 1/2in outer diameter. Which one? I do not have my props yet. My strut has a 1/2in wear groove from the previous owner. Its shallow.

This will be the first flex cable I assemble. I have the hull hardware but no parts of the drive line yet. I have no references to understand what will really happen, other then pictures on OSE and the web.

Can you post some pictures of what you have going on.

Even if it's stepped down the drive dog should be on the 3/16" part. I've never seen on snap off.

I would get a picture, but i have nothing to show. Maybe Tom L has a picture of one. I am in the process of picking drive line hardware to buy. I am only in possession of a 1/4 shaft strut, with octura 1662's on the way.

I want to pull the trigger on flex cables asap, as OSE was out of stock until yesterday. Their selection of drive dogs is what is throwing me off. They reference the hub size of the props. I do not know what size the hub on the 1662 is. My original question deals with this. OSE has a 3/16 drive dog in a small outer diameter, a large od, and a tapered size. They have 1/4 dogs in 7/16od and 1/2od.

I will post OSE's reply to this as well for future reference.

Post a link for your shaft. Normally the shaft stub matches your prop and strut. Running a .250 stub through a .250 strut that steps down for the prop sounds new to me. Most nitro guys are not getting hardware from OSE. .250 shaft with a .187 stub and a.187 strut. Check out Speed Master or Aeromarine.

You need to run a 3/16 drive dog. The 1662 (3/16 hub) will NOT mate up with a drive dog on the 1/4 part of the shaft.

I have a good number of Andy Brown 1662 props with 3/16 hubs if you are interested

I will check out those links asap. I have only stuck with OSE because during my initial hunt, pre INTLW member, they were the only ones to come up with a 1/4 step down to 3/16 and i did not belong to any other communities. I was recommended that shaft and prop combo by the hulls donor, as was his past setup. From what I am told is this was a staple setup back when the mongoose was competitive. Er more competitive...

I also may have made it slightly confusing. OSE offers their drive dogs with different outer diameters. Link in above post. Any idea what the OD of the hub is on an octura 1662? I am sure Andy's is close or identical. They may all work but I would rather learn by asking then with my wallet... lol Thanks so far guys!

The strut for 1/4" is as large as the larger 1/4" drive dogs. I have done them on both but usually prefer the dog up in the 1/4" so the prop hub is on the 3/16" as far as it can. It just creates less chance to snap one at the step as the square cut at the transition is a weak point. On many props it leaves so excess thread so I machine aluminum spacers rather than thread the nut up 5/8" of thread.

I also ran 1/4 inch shafts with 3/16 stubs back in the 1980s when I ran twin engine nitro cat hulls because the counter rotating props available were all 3/16. I snapped the shaft when the drive dog was on the 3/16 stub a couple times before trying the 1/4 drive dog. The 1/4 inch dog worked for years and never snapped. Use Daniels suggestion for sure.

I got word From OSE. He also recommends going with a 1/4 dog. I asked about nut spacing too. Reply with OSE parts# list:


"Yes, you would have extra space a bullet nut will probably not work. Maybe with the spacer"
