A friend is interested in building this hull i spoke to a fella who himself and another friend of his each built this boat 10 years ago one used a 5t Astro 25 the other a pair of 12 t 05 s on a Hughey twin gear box he said neither boat got on plane properly nor had decent speed to be able to race in 12 cell sport hydro he is guessing the physical size is to big at 28 1/4 '' with a 14 '' beam .Has any one had a similar exprience ? Or what other changes need to be made to this boat to make it competitive in 12 cell sport hydro would kindly appreciate any suggestions.

That boat is just fine for the current crop of 12 cell power systems. To give you and idea of what's possible, I run a PT sport 20 in 12 cell and it's more than competetive (holds the current 5 lap 1/8 mile NAMBA record) . If your buddy is interested in building, I'd convert a whiplash 20 to electric (I've got one on the bench).

Just my .02

I built the same boat and it runs great. I was runnig an 8XL in mine with a X440 prop and a Navy 77. It is plenty fast with this setup for most racing and sport uses although it would be balistic with one of the Nue motor and a beefier controller. I ran mine with the strut sat a bit lower than the prints show to help hold it on the water. Brian could give more insight on a good motor prop combo when it comes to the Nue motors, I don`t run oval for sport or racing anymore so I have no info there. The above setup is sure to make you smile.

While the above setup may not be the fastest;

To finish first, first you must finish!

Put the Nue motor in it though, it will be scary fast.

One other note:

Since its a wooden boat and old, and also was not designed to run as fast as it will with the power we have now you can expect some cracking in the sponson bottoms. Not to bad in good water but in rough water its almost a given in time. Make sure to look them over real good after each run since they were built some time ago. I strechted one out for Larry Larson to race in Q-Sport at the Nationals in Frisco a few years back. With the added weight of the batteries and the rough water it messed the sponsons up pretty bad. I ran like a bat outa ???? but structually it couldn`t handle it. Having said that I would recomend using them with a mild setup for sport use and if you like the way they run, then build another and beef up the sponsons with thicker plywood or using two layers would be easier to form around the front part of them.

Good luck and have fun.
