Mike T. drove out in the boonies to go to the pond with me'n matt for my OB hydro's second run, after some tweaking, coaxing, and pleading we [well... : :) Mike actually] got it running well and I had the great driving skills to crash twice in about 6 runs [ :p ]......one of the problems that sort of corrected itself the more we ran the engine was the engine taking off backwards when the starter was removed [yup, we switched to Mike's electric starter from our "tape-starter"] The engine's compression is extremely tight so it seems like the problem must be the engine hitting alot of compression and reversing itself...will this go away when the engine is fully broken in or do i have to sacrifice some of that compression and shim the engine some more?

any theories or opinions would be appreciated,

Joe

It happened to me only a few times on my old K&B 7.5. Geez, I don't really know if you can prevent it. Maybe you could turn the idle up a bit more so it won't get a chance to change directions. Also, this happened more often when I was very rich. Good luck, homes.

:DThis seems to only happen to me when my starter battery goes low ,make sure you have good power out of yours. my two cents Dale. 8) sunny and 70 in toledo pond action for me today :D

Just had to ask something...when fiddling with the idle screw, which way should i turn it (in or out) if it is turning over backwards around 2 in 3 times?

It really S$#Ts me because i just want to tet it into the water and run it, but each time i have to shut it down and start it again :p

I almost feel like i should try the starter spinning backwards and see if that works better...

Kris, try this. If it's running backwards at an idle, slowly cover the carb inlet with your finger. Just before the engine dies, it should (now I said SHOULD) pop and start spinning the right direction. As soon as it pops, move your finger. You'll know it worked if the engine picks up speed and smooths out.

O.K. here's the deal. This happened to me along time ago, BLB (Before List Bot) LOL (in good spirit of Easter).

I found that my flex cable was either to long or to swollen. When it would start, the flywheel and prop shaft assembly would spin clockwise but what would happen was the middle part of the flex cable was just wrapping up, similar to if you twisted a wet towel. Then it would have the recoil effect and snap the cable to reverse itself! Drove me crazy because it was the last thing I checked. : :)

I just realized I have hanging on my parts wall is one of the K&B flex shafts that is too short and come w/two ball bearings to make them functional. K&B really put out some junk from time-to-time. :p
