I believe the new owners of the IW forum no longer everybody posting their names .....I personally thought that to be a bad move.....🤨 that sets up the forum ripe for possible fraud....
Just a thought .....
Nobody on the forum should be able to hide in obscurity......
Require everyone on the forum to fill out a short IW bio with a photo of their drivers license..... kind of like a voter a ID requirement....
If they will not do that then they shouldn't be on or remain on the forum....simple as that....
This approach takes the monkey off the back of the admin and moderators and puts it right on the back of the people using the forum.....right where it should be.....The forum users should play an active part in protecting the sandbox they play in.....
In my opinion this problem could be addressed pro-actively not re-actively....
I think in Theory that would work, however I am one not to post my ID online, I don't need to be hacked having my address, License number etc on the Interwebs.

Well being a retired lawman. Posting your DL ID up here will be a very big mistake. When they have your DL #, then they can get your SS #. Then the scammers can start with Identifying Theft & other various crimes. Believe me I have over 20 years in law enforcement I've seen it all.

Gday Guys
There is no need for ID. All that's needed is like this hand wrote on a paper under the item in each photo.

Item listed
International waters For sale
Date- 10/12/21
Name- Brad Thorne.
Location/ Sydney Australia

This is the basic information that is available on this forum anyway, This way people know you have the item and that photos are current.

Well I would of broke that rule with my anvil pic. I cheated and pulled up an old pic that I had from the last time. I posted them for sale before I had them all completed. I scammed you with my pic. Dont you all feel like I took advantage of you. LOL The current pic idea does not keep you from getting scammed. They can still not send it. There is no full proof way.

No It wouldn't stop someone from total getting scammed, but having to put detail along with the item in the photo sure does help to stop these guys just pulling our photo of the net.

Personally don’t see why sellers shouldn’t have to use a payment service that isn’t protected? PayPal goods/ services only. Venmo, CashApp and PayPal F&F offer no buyer or seller protection. Money orders/ checks are at least trackable as well.
Been multiple possible scammers on here recently to the point that some extra protection is needed.

I am just going to pay the extra fee from now on. Its just not worth it to lose out on the item and the money both like that.

I don’t know who this person is, I am not judging him as I don’t know all the facts.

One thing for sure, I will never use PayPal F&F or money orders. If the seller refuses to accept PayPal payment, then I just don’t buy it.

Posting my DL in any public unsecured forum will never happen. I would rather quit the hobby than give out my personal information to people I don’t know.

Bradley,
I respect your take on this subject......
Believe it or not your info is already out there for someone to use......In my opinion if a situation arises , hit the situation head on and correct it if you can......
As of right now IW is a safe place for scammers/thieves to operate...."be pro-active"....
Later...and have a great holiday......Rod

I agree that the safest way to pay or be paid is a secure service like Paypal, but they are not all-powerful. I recently made two purchases over a couple days from EBAY sellers who purported to be in the US and offered quick shipment. I paid for both with Paypal. When neither showed up as expected, I attempted to reach them through EBAY, but got no answers. I filed claims with Paypal on both of them. One seller with a Chinese name ans address paid the money back the same day, but I am still waiting, three months later, for the other. No system is infallible, but Paypal is still my go-to for sending and receiving payments. The 3% fee I pay includes the seller protections against fraudulent buyers, so I say it is cheap insurance. One other thing, unless a customer has a proven track record with me, I (almost) NEVER ship anything until it is paid for. It may be a bother to create an invoice for a $10 item and pay a 30 cent fee to Paypal, but the customer knows exactly what he is paying for and has the opportunity to question the charges or cancel the order before he pays. Simply sending someone some money by F&F is asking, and giving permission, to be scammed.
Yes, I've done it, but I still don't recommend it if you are not personally acquainted with the seller.
I suggest if you're going to post a "borrowed" or "stock" photo that you should make it clear that the picture is not of the actual item. But that begs the question, "Why wouldn't you just take a picture of the actual item to begin with?"

It’s really rather simple. Stop circumventing PP fees and your protected.

And yes a simple piece of paper with the sellers name and date included in the pics would stop the wide open avenue of google pics.
Paypal fees have gotten excessive. I look at it this way, if it's someone I know I can trust and/or have previous history with I have no issues with paying F&F. For the same reason I have no reserve in asking for payment in F&F based on my reputation as a seller. Bottom line- there is no perfect system to 100% prevent fraud. Also it is possible we are dealing with a case of identity theft, can't rule that out either and I am looking into things as much as I can as well.

Car insurance is excessive too but you don’t go with out it……..
No issue sending FF but if you don’t know someone they aren’t FF.
I pay a lot of people FF but I also don’t blame the system for getting screwed Either. I know The risk.

OK gang a little more info- it is somewhat feasible that we may be dealing with identity theft here. Bryan Calabrese is an I/W member since spring of this year. His wife is Christine Calabrese, appears to have been formerly Christine Doherty. A boating vendor (who I will leave out of this) has reached out to me that Bryan contacted him about being hacked. So this is a possibility, at this point remote as more Qs need answering but still possible......

I have my doubts that he is innocent in all this. The paypal was Dan Doherty which I think was Dana his mom before you hit send. and it had both him Bryan and Christine's emails on the paypal after you hit amount and click next. all the names go right along with the public history page I shared.

And he was just asking about the pipe length for the zip pipe and 26pum lasy friday night for his zippkits order that was coming he said he was waiting on. He said he had been waiting 15 days on his order and that it was just slow getting to me also because of the busy season.. I just know that one member talked to him on the phone and said he seemed nice but if you read all his posts since join they all sound a little weird. He told me he had raced k&b with dumas hot shots and won a lot of races against os outboards when I bought that one. and that they were overpriced. I don't know I have a hard time trusting he just was hacked.

He did act funny even in messages when I was asking about tracking saying he was going to get it from his wife and send it . He was almost getting annoyed that I kept asking for tracking saying that he heard of some shipments on fedex getting thrown in a ravine. I think he just took the money and ran. hope he enjoys his new zip boat. And all of our money.

He even asked what size ball links I needed when I said hey if your scrapping that boat send me the cables and ends off it and send with the outboard. He replies buys in bulk and asked if I wanted 2/56 or 4/40 and said he would send me some with the os outboard. It just is such a mind circle of confusion all of the things he said once he got payment. So he definitely knew about end sizes and other things he said so It wasn't a Nigerian or something I was talking to.

I am now just trying to figure out what gas engine is best bang for the buck and get one ordered before Zenoah raises there prices in January. Heck he charged me 160 for that 26Pum engine and being a noob at gas motors I didn't even see that gizmo had them for 184.00 I should have just bought it from giz instead and would have for sure got it . But who could have known he would never send it..

I feel bad for all the guys on here because still every day coming home from cleaning I am looking at the porch still hoping kind of to see the packages on the step. sucks.

I had been talking to by sons also about Paypal how it hasnt always covered us. They reminded me of when I had my scooter 4 wheeler import race business that once I sent a cylinder to a guy and he wasn't happy with it and send back a box of rocks with a note that said fu and got a refund from paypal and got the cylinder for free.

Another time we restored a ppi a1200 3 foot long amplifier and sold it on ebay and the guy swapped the boards with his and sent back a fried board in my chassis and got his refund. Its better for buyers than sellers. I partially stopped selling on ebay just because of all the scammers like that wanting a refund when there was nothing wrong with the item. They always sided with the buyer for me when I had the scooter business selling on there.

Do you do any banking on line?....Do you pay any bills on line?......If so you have a lot more sensitive info on line than your DL photo....
