I bought an Areo Tech 7.5 tunnel it had a Nelson earlier so I got a Nelson from Gary Pruess tried to use Champion #1 that was on the boat.... with out much luck used it with a K&B 49 series carb and K&B 7.5 remote needle before carb .The power would come on like a rocket and just fall off . I stopped using it and just went with the K&B still having some problems finding needle when I noticed my Irwin pipe is starting to split at seams . Should I give it another try ? If so how? I don't want to waste any more time tring to tune what can't be tuned.

Put an OS 40A carb on it, or a Geragthy carb, Gary runs Geragthy carb, A Mack 7.5 pipe on his for SAW. I run a OPS 7.5 with muffler, also OPS 9270 7.5 pipe works

I run 40 A carbs on rigger, Geragthy on mono. Keep testing. I ran a Geraghty carb and Cooper pipe in my Leecraft with AB third needle, worked fine, fuel cell by Mike Z. Reduce the stinger on the pipe also.

Good Luck

Mark,

You done good. The Illini club is a good one.. there members (hugh..hugh.. i said member...) are as good as it gets.. stick with it.

As far the carb goes any will likely work as long as the hole in the carb is not to big (this should not be a problem with the nelson) and that the barrel still has a nice fit. Bill is quite right.. both OS and Rod Geragthy make good carbs. The OS has the advantage of the low speed needle and this can have some benefits with a tunnel boat. However when Rod sets up a carb for a motor the bore dia has been set to the motor... what to do....O the Pressure.... :D

I would richen the heck out of the needle and launch the boat so that no matter what.. its goes.. it might be a pig on the water but this is OK for the first try..

If it does not go on this setting then other things are going on... The pipe needs to be changed to one that is in good working order. You dont want to fight two bads at the pond.

#1 Fix the pipe problem

#2 if your running a remote mixture control get rid of the K&B needle in line. It is just another spot for a problem to occur.

#3 Put the shortest arm you can on the mixture servo so the adjustment is as fine as possible.

#4 make sure the mixture control linkage has no slop.

#5 richen it all the way up and launch the boat. lean it till the motor just comes on the pipe. Run a couple of laps to build heat in the motor, and fine tune it.

On the Nelson it is important not to over prop it. This is the biggest problem that I have seen people have. I like a 1450 back cut and pitched up a little. I would have to check but I think that my current prop has 3.3 inches of pitch.

You might also check the head clearance. My K&B SAW engine would come on hard and then just fall off. The head clearance was too tight. I put it back where it belonged and no more problem. I don't know what the clearance should be on your Nelson, but i'm sure someone here can help you.
