This is a reply to an enquiry a fellow sport shooter got from Pierre:
This Liberal government has ignored the truth about gun violence in Canada: gun violence is not solely caused by gun ownership. After all, it’s easier to go after the legal guns you know about than the illegal ones you don’t.
While the Liberals punish law-abiding farmers, hunters, and sport shooters, gun smugglers and gangs are given a free pass. This is unacceptable.
Here is what I propose:
Maintain vetting and training requirements for gun ownership
Toughen punishments for lawbreakers:
Implement a five-year minimum sentence for gun smuggling, trafficking, and gun-related offenses causing bodily harm to others.
Ban gun ownership for those convicted of domestic violence.
Enforce weapons prohibition for those convicted of gun-related offenses.
Ensure firearm classification is based on what the gun does, not how scary it looks
Reject the costly long gun registry
Remove criminal penalties for honest paperwork mistakes, like missing a renewal deadline
Conservatives have, and will always, support common-sense firearms policies that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals.
Sincerely,
Hon. Pierre Poilievre P.C., M.P. Carleton
Leader of the Official Opposition
