Just reaching out to see if anyone would be willing to make a 1999 or early 2000s 1/8th scale Miss DYC Unlimited Hydroplane. I'd really like to have the boat but I have absolutely no boat building abilities.

Thanks!

Having someone build you one of these would likely be EXPENSIVE and wait time will be long. If there are people doing turnkey boats out there still, I’m not sure who they are. So you have some options, but most are going to require you to acquire some sort of working knowledge to rig and maintain one at the very least. Options:

1.) Watch the Scale Hydro and For Sale (Classified) forums here. You might find one used. If someone is selling a Winston Eagle, Smokin’ Joes, York Intl hull from that era, that’s your boat. You would have to repaint it, which is a process in and of itself.

2.) Phil Thomas Hydros has the 8700 hull in fiberglass. This would be eliminate ALOT of work but you would still need to be able to fill, sand, paint, rig, and set up the boat.

3.). Actually build one. ML Boatworks has laser cut kits that are really nice. I think they have an “Extreme” kit for this hull. Order the kit and all the sheeting and stringer stock all in one place. You can get a cowl from RC Boat Co. Vinyl Graphics from Wes Ellet. It’s a nice winter project and you learn a ton.

4.) Maybe buy a smaller boat like a sport hydro and go out and run the thing and see if you enjoy it. Complete boats and/or kits are available fairly frequently here. And to be honest, the Proboat UL-19 is a nice running hull which is ready to run and a couple mods make this boat run real well.

Anyway, I’m not trying to discourage you but you need to know what you are getting into. There isn’t anyone here that won’t agree with me I don’t think. You really need to affiliate yourself with a local club to learn about these if you are serious about it. This was critical for me back in the day. The knowledge acquired in building, rigging, and painting one of these is extremely helpful when you go to run it.

Best of luck Pal!

Hey Reid !
About your request for a 1/8th scale Unlimited, I have always wanted to build a RC Boat but I to am very limited on my mechanical aptitude. But I figured why not try and build it yourself, So I went for it. It took 7-8 months and I did it with the help of this forum.
FYI: I have worked on my own car and I understand that it takes a good manual with details to build and fix anything. BUT ITS SO WORTH IT>

If he was supposed to call you he will get around to it. LOL I need to talk to him Since you guys are talking Scale and sport 40 I may have to find a pace to stay and take you guys on for 2023. Wes can build that scale for you but I agree with Rick on the way it should be done You can get a hull from Phil Thomas and cut the build time in half According to how busy he is Dean Werges Larry Hartenstein Kenny Mudd Carl Graph and others could do that paint Job. Wes probably has the graphics even if he didn't. we got videos, of races and different years that boat raced We just bring them up o the big screen

Hey Rich,

Thanks for all of the helpful info! I was actually posting for my uncle and I know he doesn't have the time to make one right now, although I've always thought about it. One of the big things that's always stopped me is the fact that there aren't any instructions. If I bought a wood kit or a fiberglass hull, where do I mount the rudder? How do I make the stuffing box? And almost infinite more questions and skills that I don't possess. I made a few 1/8th wood airplane kits but they had wonderful directions so it was much easier and within my skillset. I really do appreciate all the help though!

GIVE IT A GO.
Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the help! Are there instructions for everything in the wood kits for building, hardware install, etc? My dad and uncles have had 1/8th scales and all I can remember is constant guesswork and frustration at times haha. Thanks again though

Reid by now you should see your choices are very limited. Your post started with would someone build me a boat!! You got several offers from a few experts who I'm sure could build you a great running scale. Dumas models is the only company that produced a full 1/8 scale kit with comprehensive instructions with a hardware kit that wasn't much good. Many skilled modeler's have built and raced these kits and done well. Even the Dumas kits are not for the novice builder. Your original plan to have someone build you a complete model is your best and really only choice. Best of luck with one of the above modeler's to build you a boat. You will be happy with your investment.

Hi Reid:

What Tim said is good advice if you don’t want to do any of it. I understand about the instructions. ML Boatworks makes really nice laser cut kits but there are zero instructions. Now with that said, he pretty much states that the plans available from David Newton at Newton Marine are essentially the instructions. So you need to buy those too AND you have to buy the sheeting and basswood sticks etc… which you can get from him too. Great kits but you have to know what you’re doing.

Now, Phil Thomas does provide instructions with his fiberglass hulls. He also marks where all the holes need to be drilled for strut, rudder, stuffing tube, etc… so that’s an option for you that kind of meets your criteria.

But like Tim said, there are clearly a few that would be willing to help you with building you an 1/8 scale here.
